One of the questions I get most often is how to sleep with curly hair, so that you don’t need to refresh every day, especially from those new to the curly girl method. Sleeping with curly hair seems to be something many curlies and wavies struggle with.

If you want to know how to sleep with curly hair, you have 4 simple options:

  1. go to bed with completely dry hair that has ‘set’
  2. use something to protect your hair like a buff or silk pillowcase
  3. try a protective hairstyle like a ‘pineapple’
  4. use a scalp treatment serum and/or dry shampoo for scalp issues

Successfully preserving curls overnight hair is not as hard as you think. Let’s go over these 4 options so you can see how easy it is to keep your curls overnight and spend less time fussing with your hair in the mornings.

How To Keep Curls Overnight

1. Go to bed with completely “set” hair

On wash day, I make sure to wash my hair early enough that it is completely dry before I fall asleep.

I also try to wait at least an hour after it has dried for the style to set before putting on the buff.

This means I usually wash in the afternoon and I try not to go out so that my style doesn’t get ruined. That’s not always possible but it helps me have lasting results.

The way your hair turns out on wash day is very important because that’s the style that will lock in and what you’ll be preserving for the next few days.

Some people wait to scrunch out the crunch until the morning which helps your curls stay put overnight.

Experiment both ways and see what works for your hair. Leaving the cast on longer gives me more definition but it kills my volume so I scrunch out the crunch soon after my hair has dried.

2. Protect your hair at night with something like a buff and a silk pillowcase

The most important step is using a buff every night (pictured below). This is the one thing that makes the biggest difference. I held off on trying this for years because I didn’t think it would do much but I wish I had done it sooner.

I took a poll on my Instagram stories recently, and it seems that using a buff and silk or satin pillowcase are the most common ways curlies protect their hair at night.

I use the same buff maybe 2-3 nights because they do stretch out. I make sure to pull it down over my ears so that it stays on all night.

The buff will slide up and possibly come off so I also have a silk pillowcase. I have one that’s only silk on one side which makes it affordable. You can read more about the benefits of silk pillowcases here.

Some people struggle with the buff staying on their heads while they sleep. In this case, you can clip the sides above your ears to try to hold it in place.

It’s even more important to use a silk or satin pillowcase if you can’t keep your buff on.

Silk scarves and bonnets are other options aside from a buff that you can use to protect your hair while you sleep.

3. Try a protective hairstyle

Protective styles may work for you instead of a buff.

Pineapple, medusa clipping, and a bun or braid are some ideas. Experiment with these and see which works best for you.

Because my hair is so thin and easily disrupted, I can’t put up in anything without ruining the curl pattern so I just pull it in a buff and leave it like that.

A pineapple is pulling it all into a ponytail at the top of your head. Some people wrap a silk scarf similar to the way the buff is used as well.

I have also seen some people sleep in the plop, either wet or dry. I do not recommend sleeping in a wet plop because it’s bad to leave your hair wet for so long. But a dry plop might work for you.

4. Use a scalp treatment or dry shampoo for scalp issues

I like to use the Briogeo Scalp Revival treatment serum on my scalp. This serum is water based, not oil, and it helps to moisturize and balance my scalp to reduce itching and flaking.

You can see how I apply it in this hair routine video. I basically apply a drop to my hands, emulsify and rub all over my scalp in sections. This stuff has really made a difference in letting me go longer between washes.

If you tend to have oily roots you can apply dry shampoo before bed.

I use the Scalp Revival line because it helps my scalp and I usually apply some on day 3 and 4. Massage it in well and it absorbs overnight so that by the morning your hair looks fresh.

Delilah using briogeo scalp revival to wash hair less often

Optional: Do scalp massages

I also do a scalp massage using this massager after applying a little more of the scalp treatment on day 3 or 4. This helps keep my scalp calm and feeling fresh. If your scalp gets itchy or oily then this can help with that.

I usually do this at night before putting on the buff but I have done it in the morning if I feel I need it.

I like to do a quick scalp massage in the morning without the serum after taking my hair out of the buff as well. This will help fluff your hair and resettle it.

Delilah using a scalp massager

So these are the basics on how to sleep with curly hair to keep it looking decent for several days.

Like I said before, the hair buff is the most important one so if you only take one piece of advice from this post, it should be to at least try that.

Sleeping with curly hair doesn’t have to ruin your hair!

Tips for Fine and Thin Curly Hair

If you specifically have fine or thin curly hair as I do, it does better with less manipulation. Remember that fine hair is more prone to damage and more easily loses its curl pattern so you need to be more delicate with it.

I find that my hair does better with just a buff versus using a hair tie or combining the two. I don’t stuff my ends into the buff but you can try that and see how it works. I’ve tried sleeping without a buff on my silk pillowcase and it’s nowhere near as effective as the hair buff.

I think the buff just holds the hair in place so well and there is very little friction so that’s why it works so well. So if you have thin or fine curly hair give a buff or wrap a try without a hair tie or bun.

Are you looking for affordable curly girl method approved products to start the curly girl method? We all know switching to the Curly Girl Method can get expensive as you experiment with different curly girl method products or if you’re a product junkie.

Finding affordable that actually work for most hair types almost seems like a unicorn, but lately, more brands are coming out with products that cater to all hair types. Lucky for you, I’ve rounded up over 50 affordable curly girl products!

Buy Products For Your Hair Type

Before you start shopping for hair products, it’s helpful to know your hair type. Choosing the right products is based on the characteristics of your hair, and not your curl pattern. Not all curly hair products work on all curly hair. I learned that the hard way.

If you don’t already know your texture, density, and porosity, take the quiz below. You’ll also get product and styling tips based on your hair type.

How to tell if hair products are curly girl approved

If you have my getting started guide, you already know this. But you can also do it the easy way.

Check if products are curly girl approved by using the site isitcg.com. You just search for the product or paste the ingredients in and it will tell you if it’s CG approved or not.

A Note on Affordable Curly Girl Products & Ingredients

While I absolutely love EVOLVh, I know it seems pricey to some. This stuff lasts me an entire year and therefore is actually cheaper than budget brands, but I know the upfront cost is a barrier to some.

So here I list some more affordable curl girl friendly brands and products you can try. These are all cleaner as some do have fragrance or a questionable ingredient.

If you are picky about using clean ingredients then make sure you read the ingredients label before purchasing any of these. They are all curly girl method approved products so you only need to look for ingredients you’re avoiding for other reasons.

With some of these, like Shea Moisture, they can cause buildup over time so you would need to clarify regularly (once a month). Also, ensure you’re deep conditioning 1-4 times a month.

For more info on the curly girl method, check out my basic guide for both wavy and curly hair, or join my course Fabulous Curls Academy.

If there are other products you know of let me know so I can add them to the list. This list is specifically for nontoxic curly girl products so that is why I have left out some of the other popular brands and products.

If you’re new to embracing your curly hair, you’re likely feeling overwhelmed with all the products, methods, techniques, acronyms, and words (plopping, STC???).

It’s a lot of information to sort through and it’s easy to go down the rabbit hole and try all the things in an effort to succeed in your curly hair journey.

Some people are successful right away and for others, it takes a much longer time.

So what’s the secret to success on your curly hair journey?

Tracking what you’re doing from the beginning.

But first, if you want to start caring for your curly hair the right way, download my Quick Start Guide To Mastering Your Curls which outlines my simple 5-step system to get you started right now.

This guide simplifies the process for you and outlines exactly what you need to do, in an easy to follow format. It also includes a curly hair glossary and the ingredients you should avoid. Sign up below to get your FREE copy!

Why Track Your Curly Hair Journey?

  1. Understanding Your Curls:

When it comes to curly hair, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your curls are unique, and what works for one curly head may not work for another. Keeping a journal helps you understand your hair’s specific needs, responses, and patterns.

  1. Documenting Progress and Setbacks:

By tracking your curly hair journey, you get to see your progress in real time. It’s motivating to see how far you’ve come! Plus, if you ever experience a setback, your journal can help you identify what may have caused it.

  1. Identifying the Best Products and Techniques:

Your journal becomes a treasure trove of information about what products and techniques work best for your curls. You can experiment, track, and finally nail down that perfect routine.

How to Track Your Curly Hair Journey

Ensuring success and truly making progress with your curly hair is actually pretty simple. You just have to track what you are doing. That’s it!

You simply need to record pictures of your hair, the products and methods you’re using, and your schedule.

Without doing this, you risk overdoing moisture, creating buildup, not finding what methods and products truly work, and not actually learning about your hair.

The point of your curly hair journey is to have healthy, beautiful hair in its natural state. If you never learn about your hair how will that happen?

If all you’re doing is slapping different products you hear about and rotating through products and methods you see on YouTube without a real plan then what are you actually going to get out of that?

You might eventually get to the endpoint but how long will that take you? How much money and time will you waste? And all the frustration along the way…

I did not track my journey in my first year of embracing my curly hair and progress was slow.

I would try a product once or twice, then toss it aside.

I didn’t see the relationship between certain ingredients and humidity.

I over moisturized my hair because I wasn’t paying attention to how it felt and looked and had no idea what it needed.

All of that could have easily been avoided if I was tracking my journey.

Delilah’s wavy hair at the very beginning of her curly hair journey and her full curls after she tracked what products what she was using.

I saw much more improvement in my second year, which was when I started tracking what I was doing.

This ended up happening because I was blogging but it turned out to be a huge turning point in my curly hair journey.

I started having more consistent results, even when trying new products.

I figured out the techniques that really worked for me and stuck with those (unless I was testing a new method).

Seriously, keeping a record with photos and the details of the products and techniques was the best thing I did that year!

Start with the Basics

Make a note of your hair texture, density, porosity, and current hair health. These factors will guide your product choices and techniques.

Take photos and keep them organized

A picture is worth a thousand words! Snap some photos of your curls before and after styling. This will help you visually track your progress and see what’s working

There are a few ways to do this easily.

You can take photos and keep them in a folder/album on your phone, or create a private Instagram account to upload your photos with captions (this is my favorite option).

I like the private Instagram idea because you can list the products and methods used in the caption and it doesn’t take up space on your phone. It already has the date and you can see the visual by scrolling so it’s easy to see progress.

Track Your Daily Routine

Note down the products you use each day, the techniques you try, and the results. Be sure to include any changes in weather, as this can significantly impact your curls.

You can write a note in your calendar app, use the private Instagram account idea, or use any note-taking app to do this.

It’s super important to do this because you can see if there is a certain product linked to limp curls, frizz, or other problems you may be having. Without tracking you can’t pinpoint the specific problem as easily.

It’s also great to compare results as you test new products and methods. Sometimes it’s an ingredient and not necessarily the product so seeing that you had the same problem when using three products that have one particular ingredient in common is valuable.

Experiment and Note Your Observations

Try different products, techniques, and routines, and jot down how your curls respond. This will help you identify your hair’s likes and dislikes.

A side by side comparison of Delilah's limp curls versus full and bouncy hair achieved by tracking how different product work for her.

Create a schedule to ensure you maintain balance

I can’t tell you how many times I talk to people who have been struggling with their hair for a few weeks and when I ask them when was the last time they clarified or deep conditioned they can’t remember!

It’s so important to keep a schedule so that you maintain balance.

If you’re not regularly clarifying, deep conditioning, and doing other treatments that your hair needs you’ll eventually start to have problems like frizz, dryness, limp curls, tangles, and more.

You can do all of these easily with my Curly Journey Journal!

If you’re following the curly girl method, you need to make sure you’re using a cowash or curly girl approved shampoo! Here I’m sharing the BEST curly hair shampoos out there.

With the exception of clarifying, the shampoo you use on a regular basis should be sulfate free, silicone free, and drying alcohol free.

And while many curly girls cowash, for others like me, it works better to use a low poo, also known as a sulfate free curly girl method approved shampoo, whether it’s every wash day or alternating with a cowash.

Read on to find our top picks for shampoo for curly hair.

Ready to transform your frizz into defined, bouncy curls and waves? Join my free Quick Start Guide To Mastering Your Curls email course below and be on your way to fabulous curls in just a few steps!

Why Use A Shampoo On Curly Hair?

Low poo shampoo lathers and cleanses without stripping curls of its natural oils. These are specifically formulated to be gentle on curls which tend to be dryer than other hair types.

Compared to cowash, a shampoo will remove more buildup and leave your hair and scalp cleaner. You need to be sure you’re using a shampoo on a regular basis to avoid buildup and scalp issues. Strictly using cowash is not recommended.

If you’re struggling with cowashing, then give a low poo a try to see if it works better for you. Especially for those with thin or fine hair, low poo shampoo tends to work better since it’s not as moisturizing and heavy.

Also, don’t forget to clarify! Find curly girl clarifying shampoo and tips here.

How Often Can You Shampoo Curly Hair?

I get lots of questions about how often you can use a low poo shampoo. If your shampoo is curly girl approved – meaning it doesn’t have silicone, sulfate, or drying alcohols, then you can use it as often as you want!

You can shampoo daily if you have to. There is no reason to stretch out your washes as long as possible. All that is doing is negatively affecting the health of your scalp.

Choosing The Right Shampoo For your Curls

Consider how much moisture you need in your products as that’s the biggest factor when choosing a shampoo.

There are sulfate free shampoos (low poo) which are more gentle and moisturizing, and clarifying shampoos which are stronger to remove buildup. For daily use, go with a low poo shampoo. Clarifying shampoos should be used less frequently, about once a month.

You can check out my product matching guide to help you choose the right products for your hair type. This guide will show you how to identify your hair type and characteristics, provide some styling tips, and list exact products that will work on your hair type. Click here for more info.

The 10 Best Curly Hair shampoos

I chose the following products based on a few points:

  • effectiveness at cleansing
  • ease of use
  • ingredient quality
  • concentration – how much you need to use
  • buildup potential

I have assigned a number from 1 to 5 for each category, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best.

1. Innersense Pure Harmony Hairbath – best overall for all hair types

Innersense has 3 lines but the Pure Harmony is loved by all curl types. If you want more moisture go with the Hydrating line and for color treated hair the Color Radiance line is equally amazing.

They all have a light scent, are made with organic ingredients, and are extremely concentrated so they should last a while. All lines require water to get them to foam. Shop Innersense Shampoo here.

  • effectiveness at cleansing – 4
  • ease of use – 4
  • ingredient quality – 5
  • concentration – 5
  • buildup potential – very low

Do you ever feel like your curls have a mind of their own? One day they’re perfectly defined, and the next they’re frizzy and unruly. As someone with curly hair, I understand the struggle all too well.

But, fear not! A great gel can be your saving grace. However, with so many options out there, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the 10 best gels for curly hair that are also curly girl approved (just in case you’re following the curly girl method). Say goodbye to bad hair days and hello to perfectly defined curls! Let’s dive in.

the 10 best gels For Curly Hair

I chose the following curly hair gels based on a few points:

  • ability to create definition
  • ingredient quality
  • concentration – how much you need to use
  • how lightweight to heavy it is
  • buildup potential
  • ease of use
  • level of hold
  • also noted if it contains protein or glycerin

I have assigned a number from 1 to 5 for each category, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. Of course, they are all silicone free and drying alcohol free, which is what makes them curly girl approved.

curly girl approved gel flaxseed gel

1. DIY Flaxseed Gel – best overall for all hair types

Yep, DIY flaxseed gel is by far the most universal gel for hair out there! It adds a ton of definition, creates a good cast (read: less frizz), adds softness and shine, and doesn’t cause any buildup. It’s super cheap and a great option for beginners too.

The best part is that it is very customizable and easy to make. So if you need more or less moisture/hold it’s an easy tweak. Get the recipe here.

And if you prefer buying it instead, I recommend A Simple Planet or the more moisturizing Miribel Naturals.

  • ability to create definition – 5
  • ingredient quality – 5
  • concentration – 5
  • lightweight
  • buildup potential – very low
  • ease of use – 5
  • level of hold – medium
  • can add protein and glycerin if you want

2. Giovanni LA Natural Styling Gel – best affordable hard hold gel

This is a fantastic budget option for a hard hold gel that works great in high humidity and dry climates. It can be drying to some so if your hair gets over moisturized easily this is a great option. If that’s not the case for you, just layer a good leave-in or cream under to get that moisture.

It’s pretty thick so can be tricky to figure out how much to use or how to get it to distribute. Start off with a small amount and apply to really wet hair and emulsify well. Shop the Giovanni LA Hold gel here.

Ecoslay gel for curly hair

3. Ecoslay Orange Marmalade – best for curl enhancement

Orange Marmalade is very popular for its curl enhancement and hard cast that it creates. It definitely lives up to its reputation so if you’re looking for something that has great hold, definition, and enhances curl pattern then this is it.

While this gel creates amazing definition and softness, I found this a bit too moisturizing for me so I’d say it’s great for anyone who doesn’t get over moisturized easily. It also works well in all climates. Shop the Orange Marmalade here.

  • ability to create definition – 5

This is another really popular gel because it’s easy to use, creates great definition, adds moisture, and works in most climates. You don’t need a lot and it is also a curl enhancer.

6. MopTop Curly Hair Custard – best medium hold for curl enhancement

This very popular custard is a lot like the TreLuxe gel but it has glycerin so it’s a better curl enhancer. Unfortunately, that means it doesn’t work as well in high humidity or dry conditions.

This is one of my favorite gels because of how lightweight it is while still providing hold, definition, and curl enhancement. This product must be applied to wet hair and not too much to avoid flaking. Shop the Curly Hair Custard here and use code HE10 to save.

7. Raw Curls Gel & Innersense I Create Hold – best organic options

These tied because they are so similar and both amazing. These are the cleanest gels you’ll find on the market that actually work. They create a great cast, and leave your curls shiny, soft, and bouncy.

The Raw Curls gel comes in both medium and hard hold and I can use either but prefer the medium hold. Innersense is hard hold.

Both are very concentrated, the most on this list. I recommend you apply to wet hair, starting with a small amount, and emulsify well. If your hair feels dry layer a cream underneath. Shop the Raw Curls gels here. Shop the Innersense gel here.

8. Jessicurl Spiralicious – best hard hold for humidity

This is another popular gel because it works well on all curl types in all climates. It’s also not expensive and pretty concentrated so it will last a while.

Spiralicious provides a hard hold and for most people creates a good cast that scrunches out easily to give you soft, shiny curls. Shop the Spiralicious gel here.

bounce curl light creme gel for curly hair

9. Bounce Curl Light Creme Gel – best protein heavy gel

This gel is very popular and is actually a cream gel hybrid. It is really high in protein which a lot of curls like, but some don’t. It also only offers a light hold so you may need to layer a harder hold product over if you want more hold.

This gel will give you soft, bouncy curls if your hair needs protein and isn’t sensitive to aloe. It also contains a lot of glycerin so it’s no ideal in high humidity or very dry climates. Shop the Light Creme Gel here.

  • ability to create definition – 4

Choosing The Right Gel

When it comes to choosing the right gel for your curly hair, there are a few things to consider.

First, think about your hair texture and curl pattern. If you have fine or thin hair, you may want to opt for a lighter gel that won’t weigh your curls down. On the other hand, if you have thick or coarse hair, a heavier gel may provide the hold you need to define your curls.

Next, consider the ingredients in the gel and what your hair needs. You may also want to look for products that are curly girl approved, meaning they don’t contain sulfates, silicones, or drying alcohols.

Finally, think about how you want your curls to look and feel. Do you prefer a soft, touchable hold or a firmer, more defined look? Some gels provide a crunchy hold, but can be easily scrunched out for a more natural finish.

Ultimately, the right gel for you will depend on your individual hair type and preferences. Don’t be afraid to try a few different products until you find the one that works best for you. Remember, the key to beautiful, healthy curls is finding the right products and techniques that work for you and your unique hair.

If you need help finding the products that will work for your hair type, check out my product matching guide. There are so many things to consider when choosing products and this guide will help you narrow down what you need to look for.

How to Use Gel for Curly Hair

Now that you have ten amazing options for curly hair gels to choose from, it’s important to know how to use them properly. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your gel:

1. Start with clean, damp hair. It’s best to apply gel to hair that has been freshly washed and conditioned and is still damp. This will help the gel distribute evenly throughout your curls.

2. Section your hair. To make sure you’re applying the gel evenly, divide your hair into sections. You can use clips or a hair tie to keep each section separate.

3. Apply the gel. Take a small amount of gel and apply it to one section of your hair at a time. Rub it between your palms and work it through your hair from root to tip. Be sure to distribute the gel evenly throughout each section of hair.

4. Scrunch your curls. After you’ve applied gel to all sections of your hair, use your hands to scrunch your curls upward. This will help define your curls and remove any excess water or product. Check out my guide on how to scrunch out the crunch.

5. Let your hair dry naturally or diffuse on the warm setting. Avoid touching your hair too much while it dries. This can cause frizz and disrupt the curl pattern. Instead, let your hair air dry or use a diffuser attachment on low heat.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to achieve perfectly defined, frizz-free curls with your new favorite curly hair gel!

Bottom Line

At the end of the day, the best gel for your curly hair is the one that works best for you. It’s all about trial and error, and finding what works best for your unique curl pattern and hair type.

Remember to always read the ingredients and look for products that are curly girl approved to ensure that you are providing your curls with the best possible care. With these 10 gels, you are sure to find a product that will give you the perfect curl definition, hold, and shine that you’re looking for. Happy styling!

A head full of beautiful springy curls or tumbling ringlets looks gorgeous. Natural hair has never been cooler, but it takes some effort to maintain 3B hair and keep it looking fabulous.

Hair type 3B can easily suffer from frizz, tangles, and dehydration, so you need to know the right products and the best techniques to keep your 3B locks soft, shiny, and healthy.

This guide contains tips and information to help you know if you have 3B hair, the best way to look after it, and the essential products and tools to keep your curls looking gorgeous.

The Curly Hair Spectrum: What Is My Hair Type?

The Andre Walker Hair Typing System is an easy way to determine your hair type.  There are four main hair classifications:

  • Type 1 = straight
  • Type 2 = wavy
  • Type 3 = curly
  • Type 4= coily

Then each type is broken down into subclasses A, B, and C, which describe the width of the wave, coil or curl patterns. A is the widest pattern, and C is the tightest pattern in each subclass.

Most people have a mix of curl patterns, but there will often be one dominant pattern.

If you’re unsure which hair type you have, our quick Curly Hair Type Quiz will help you learn more about your hair. It won’t tell your curl pattern, but it will give you the important information you need to choose the right products and techniques. (Knowing your curl pattern doesn’t really help with that.)

What Is 3B Hair?

Type 3B hair is in the middle of the curly hair types and falls between types 3A and 3C. Type 3B curls are pretty tight and springy, with lots of body and movement. They can get dry fairly quickly, so they need plenty of moisture and nourishment.

Before moving on to how to care for type 3B hair, let’s take a look at its typical curl pattern and texture.

3b Curl Pattern

Each curly hair type has its own distinctive curl type: 3A curls are soft, loose curls, while 3C hair has tight curls that are more like springy corkscrews. Type 3B is in the middle of these hair types, with curls that fall in between the two types.

3B hair has curls that are ringlet-shaped, springy and voluminous, and about the width of a sharpie marker. The curls start at the root and continue along the entire length of the hair strands, and they’ll stay curly even when wet.

If you have the 3B hair type, you might also have a few looser curls or tighter corkscrews in some areas.

3b Hair Texture

3B can be fine, medium, or coarse texture hair. it may even have a mix of two.

It will experience shrinkage from wet to dry and can tend to struggle with dry ends and frizz. 3B hair can also become poofy if it’s brushed when dry.

woman with 3b hair

Examples of 3B Curly Hair

The 3B hair type is pretty versatile, so there are plenty of options for 3B hairstyles. However, try to visit a stylist who is used to cutting and styling curly locks as they will know how to treat your curls.

It’s best to cut 3B hair when it’s dry, because wet 3B hair straightens out and appears much longer. Your stylist will also get a better idea of the curl type and your hair texture when it’s dry.

Midlength and Long 3b Haircuts

Adding long layers to 3B hair will take off some of the weight and give you more volume and movement. Your gorgeous ringlets will also look fantastic if you have curly bangs cut in, but make sure you go to a curl specialist for the best results.

Short 3b Hair

A shorter style highlights your gorgeous 3B curls and is easy to maintain. Go for the classic pixie cut to show off your curls, or try adding lots of layers to a shorter cut for a sophisticated look.

3b Mens Hair

Men with the 3B hair type can keep their hair fairly short on top with a fade around the back and sides, or let it grow to mid-length for fabulous defined ringlets.

3B Hair Routine

Shiny, bouncy type 3B curls look fantastic, and it’s easy to achieve them when you follow the right haircare routine for 3B hair.

Of course, everyone’s hair is unique, so you might need to try a few different products and techniques to find your perfect haircare routine. So try these curly hair tips, and soon you’ll have enviable curls that look and feel fantastic.

Identify Your Hair Porosity

Porosity is the term used to describe how easily your hair absorbs or loses moisture. Knowing if you have high-porosity or low-porosity hair will help you choose the right haircare products to suit your locks.

Low-porosity hair needs to stick to products containing light moisturizers like aloe vera, but you can use richer ingredients like coconut oil on high-porosity hair.

If you’re unsure whether you have high or low porosity, read our Ultimate Guide to Hair Porosity to learn more.

Don’t Wash Too Often

Frequent washing can make curly hair even drier and cause frizz. So it’s better to only shampoo your 3B hair once or twice a week with a gentle shampoo designed for curly hair, which means no silicones or sulfates.

In between wash days, you can rinse it with water and use a little conditioner to moisturize your curls.

You might also want to check out the Curly Girl Method, which uses no shampoo or co-washing to care for curly locks. Take a look at our Guide to the Curly Girl Method to find out more.

Pile on the Moisture

The curls in type 3B hair stop your scalp’s natural oils from reaching the ends of your strands, which causes dryness and split ends. Because of this, your 3B curls need as much moisture as possible, so try layering products to give better curl definition and less frizz.

But a heavy hair product can weigh down the 3B hair type, so go for lightweight hydrating conditioners that are sulfate-free and full of nourishing oils like argan oil or jojoba oil.

And once you’ve rinsed out your regular conditioner, you can add more moisture with a light leave in treatment. This will boost hydration and help you detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb.

It’s also a good idea to use a hair mask or deep conditioner regularly for an extra boost of hydration.

Minimize Heat Styling

Heat styling methods can seriously dry out type 3B locks but well-hydrated 3B hair looks amazing if you simply let your curls air dry. Using the plopping method to wrap your hair up in a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt will help to define your curls and dry your hair quicker.

If you decide to blow dry your hair instead of air drying it, or if you want to use heat styling tools, make sure that you use a low heat setting to avoid frizz. Using a diffuser on your blow dryer and adding a heat protectant to your locks before styling will help to reduce the damage caused by hot styling tools.

As you move around in your sleep, friction between the strands can cause frizz, knots, matting, or breakage.

So it’s essential to protect your 3B hair while you sleep. You can do this by tying it up in loose buns or braids, sleeping on satin or silk pillowcases, or wearing a silk or satin cap at night.

3B Hair Type FAQs

We’ve shared a lot of useful tips about the 3B hair type in this guide. If you would like more info, here are some of your most frequently asked questions:

What’s the Difference: 3A vs 3B Hair?

The main difference between type 3A and type 3B is the size of the curls. 3A curls are wider than 3B curls, generally about as wide as a sharpie, and the 3A hair type can sometimes even look wavy sometimes.

Hair type 3C has tighter curls than 3B, just about the size of a pencil.

How Often Should 3B Hair Be Washed?

3B curls can get dry quickly, and frequent washing will make them drier and cause frizz and breakage. So washing once a week is the best option for 3B hair.

What Does Healthy 3B Hair Look Like?

Healthy 3B hair has clearly defined, springy spirals about the width of a sharpie marker pen.

The ringlets and spirals of 3B hair are dense and full of volume, and you might find some tighter or looser curls in the mix.

The Bottom Line

Finding the perfect hair care routine can take a little time and effort. You might need to try a few different products and techniques before finding the right combination for your hair’s unique needs.

If you have 3B hair, the hair care tips in this guide will help you find the best hair products and hair care routine to keep your ringlets looking their best.

If you have wavy hair that’s mainly straight at the roots and becomes wavier further down toward the ends, you probably have 2B hair.

This wavy hair type is easy to care for, so with hardly any effort, you can have the sort of beachy, tousled waves that other hair types have to work to achieve. But like all hair types, 2B hair comes with its own problems and can struggle with dryness and frizz.

When you know how to care for the 2B hair type and which products to use, it’s pretty easy to look after. So read on to discover what 2B hair looks like, how to style 2B hair and the best care tips for your hair.

What is 2B Hair

The 2B hair type is one of the wavy hair texture classifications in the Andre Walker Hair Typing System. Type 1 hair is straight, Type 3 locks are curly, and Type 4 tresses are coily.

Within Type 2, there are three sub-classifications, A, B, and C. Type 2B hair has an S-shaped wave pattern that sits pretty flat at the roots and then becomes stronger from the mid-lengths down to the ends.

It also tends to have a medium strand texture, becomes frizzy easily, and needs styling products to define its loose curl pattern.

What Does 2B Hair Look Like?

If you have type 2B hair, your locks lie in the middle ground between straight and curly. Your 2B hair strands will look like loose S shapes that are straighter at the roots and wavier from the middle down to the ends.

The 2B hair type often has medium hair texture and fine or medium density. Its defined wave pattern can look beautifully tousled, but it can start to kink in humid weather. Without the right hair routine, the 2B hair type can soon become dry and look wild and frizzy.

Pros and Cons of 2B Hair

The gorgeous natural wave pattern of type 2B hair looks good without too much effort. Here are some of the advantages of 2B hair:

Tousled Waves

The 2B hair type tumbles into loose beachy waves from the mid-lengths downwards without needing a load of products or hours of heat styling to look good.

Natural Volume

The 2B hair type has a natural volume and fullness that makes it look thick. Although your hair is pretty straight at the roots, there’s just enough lift to keep your locks from looking limp.

Holds its style well

The gentle waves of 2B hair make it one of the most versatile hair types. You can turn it into bouncy ringlets, and with little work, you can create sleek straight hair. The medium thickness of your hair strands means it will maintain its style for up to 48 hours!

But every hair type has its own challenges, and these are some of the most common problems of 2B hair:

Tends to be dry

Your scalp’s natural oils move slowly down wavy hair strands, which means it can go longer without looking greasy. However, wavy hair can quickly become dry hair, especially at the ends.

Tends to Be Frizzy

The dryness associated with 2B hair can cause it to become brittle, rough, and frizzy. You’ll need to hydrate and moisturize your hair well to eliminate frizz.

Tangles easily

As your wavy strands slide over each other, they can quickly become tangled and knotted. And this problem only gets even worse if your hair is dry and frizzy.

Difference Between 2B Hair and Other Types

All type 2 hair has a wavy texture, but there are slight differences between each of the three types. It’s pretty normal for one person to have a mix of hair types, and of course, your hair’s porosity, texture, and density will also affect the unique look of your locks.

Determining which type 2 hair you have is really not that important, though it can be nice to know. Just be aware that knowing which curl pattern you have will not help you choose products. Your texture, density, and porosity are much more helpful for that.

Our easy Curly Hair Type Quiz is a quick way to work out your important hair stats to help you choose products and styling methods.

2A hair

2A is the first wavy hair type and has a lightly-tousled texture that looks almost like straight hair. It tends to be straight at the roots with loose S-shaped waves starting further down the hair shaft.

This wavy hair type is easier to straighten with a flat iron than type 2B hair. However, it can easily be weighed down by product buildup.

2C hair

Type 2C hair is the last of the wavy hair types with a tight wave that is almost a natural curl. But if you look closely, the wavy strands are still S-shaped rather than a spiral.

Because 2C hair is so close to the curly hair types, it’s more likely to experience frizz than type 2B hair.

How to Care For 2B Hair

Even though your natural waves are a blessing, they still need careful attention to keep them looking their best. Your natural hair type is prone to frizz and tangles, and it’s easy for your locks to become dry and brittle.

Caring for 2B hair means finding the right moisturizing products to keep your wavy hair hydrated but not weighed down. It’s essential to know your hair’s porosity and density, as these will affect how it reacts to different products.

So here are some simple hair care tips to help you manage your 2B hair:

The Curly Girl Method

Lorraine Massey’s Curly Girl Method helps you to enhance your natural curl pattern by avoiding sulfates, silicones and heat style methods. Instead, you’ll pamper your curls with co wash, wet styling and air drying.

Learning to use the Curly Girl Method takes trial and error, and your hair will need to recover from the damage it’s suffered over the years. But with time, your natural texture will shine through, and you’ll have the luscious waves you’ve longed for.

Following the curly girl method dramatically transformed my hair from mostly 2a and 2b to 2c and 3a curls.

You can find out more about this hair care routine in our Beginner’s Guide to the Curly Girl Method.

How to Shampoo and Condition

A sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner will help to cleanse and hydrate your locks without drying them out.

Wavy hair is prone to tangles, so don’t scrub away at the strands or pile your hair up on top of your head. Instead, focus the shampoo on your scalp and then gently squeeze the suds through to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair.

As well as your regular conditioner, using a deep-condition treatment, hot oil or hair mask every two weeks will ensure your hair is nourished and hydrated.

Frequency

Washing your 2B waves too often will strip away the natural sebum and leave it feeling dry and brittle. So unless your hair is visibly dirty, it’s better to only wash it every two or three days at most. A dry shampoo will freshen up your scalp if it starts to look oily between wash days.

If your hair care routine includes styling or hair care products that contain silicone, product buildup will eventually weigh your waves down. Using a clarifying shampoo once a month will remove buildup and restore your hair’s bounce.

Choose the right products

Protein-based moisturizing hair care products will help to enhance waves. But avoid using too much product or applying it to the roots, as this will weigh your waves down and make them look greasy.

Adding a moisture-rich leave in treatment containing natural oils like argan oil or avocado oil to your hair routine is a great way to tame frizz and keep your hair from looking flyaway. Using a heat protectant before heat styling is also essential to protect your beautiful waves from heat damage.

Drying Methods

Blow drying your hair can damage it, so you should blow dry your hair as little as possible if you want healthy hair.

Simply letting your hair air dry is the gentlest method, but there are two other techniques you can also try:

plopping wavy hair

Plopping

Plopping is a really easy way to retain your wave pattern while avoiding frizz or damage from hot tools.

All you have to do is apply your favorite curl-enhancing product, then flip your head over and pile your damp hair onto a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel. Wrap the towel or t-shirt into a turban on top of your head and leave your hair to dry naturally with a gentle scrunch effect that improves curl definition and boosts volume.

woman diffusing her 2b wavy hair

Diffusing

If you really can’t leave your hair to dry naturally, it’s essential to keep the heat as low as possible. Apply a heat protectant to your damp hair, use your blow dryer’s lowest setting and a diffuser attachment to reduce frizz and heat damage.

You could even plop your hair first until it’s just a little damp and then use your diffuser until it is completely dry.

combing 2b hair

Proper Brushing and Combing

2B waves are concentrated further down the strands, so it tends to tangle easily from the mid-lengths down to the ends. It’s best to detangle your hair when it’s wet, but remember that wet hair is even more fragile.

So first, saturate your locks with detangling spray before using a wide tooth comb instead of a brush to gently remove tangles and knots. This will also help to prevent hair breakage and smooth your waves without disrupting the natural curl pattern.

2B Cuts and Hairstyles

Now you know how to look after your hair, you also need to know the styles and cuts that will suit your 2B waves.

Frequency

2B hair is often quite fine and can suffer from tangling, breakage, and split ends. So regular trims are an important part of keeping your 2B waves looking their best.

You should aim to have your hair trimmed at least every 10-12 weeks, even if you are trying to grow your hair. This will enhance your natural hair texture and keep your hair looking healthy.

Length of 2B Haircuts

2B hair can look great at every length as long as you care for it properly. Choosing the optimal length for your hair and using the right styling products will help to encourage stronger waves.

Short 2B Hair

Short 2B hair can be frizz-prone, but a wavy bob is a fantastic option for your 2B waves. It’s an easy-care style that just needs to be diffuse-dried with a little curl cream or mousse to look great.

Curling a few small sections at the front of your hair with a 1-inch curling iron will add a little texture.

Shoulder Length 2B Hair

2B hair falls between straight and curly, and the ideal length for this hair type falls between short and long. Cutting your hair between your jaw and shoulder will encourage your locks to bounce naturally into gorgeous waves.

Long 2B Hair

The weight of long hair can stretch out 2B waves and make your hair look straighter. If you don’t want to lose the length, having round layers cut into your hair can help to reduce the weight, add volume and encourage the curl.

2B Hairstyles

Type 2B hair is easy to style if you know how to style it. Straightening 2B hair will take a lot of work with a brush and blow dryer, so it’s better to leave it in its natural state or enhance your gorgeous waves instead.

The styling video below shows a great way to style 2b hair for less fizz and more definition.

Here are a few more suggestions for hairstyles for 2B hair:

Natural 2B Waves

Your natural hair can look fabulous with minimal effort. You just need to add a little mousse or light curl cream to enhance your hair’s texture and volume, then scrunch it up a little. That’s all there is to it!

Extra Volume Waves

Try using pin curls or rollers to give your hair extra volume, breaking up the curls for added volume. Diffusing your hair dry with a light curl cream will avoid frizz, or you could use a curling iron to curl sections of your hair, running your fingers through afterward to turn the curls into loosely defined waves.

The Perfect Half-Up, Half-Down Look

A half-up half-down hairstyle is a great way to make your hair look longer and thicker. Simply air dry or diffuse dry your waves and then gather the top of your hair into a ponytail, pulling a few tendrils loose for a face-framing effect.

Beach Waves

Messy beach waves are the easy option for 2B hair because this is your hair’s natural style. Applying a curl cream or mouse will help to combat frizz, and a little sea salt spray will enhance your natural waves.

Identifying your hair type is one of the most important things you can do for good hair health. Once you know which hair type you have, it’s much easier to choose the best products to look after your curls properly.

If you’re wondering, ‘what hair type do I have?’, you’re not alone. It can be tricky to work out your natural hair type, especially if you have one of the curly or coily hair types. But our guide will help you to decode your curl type

Once you know your hair type, porosity, and density, it’s easier to understand the best way to care for your curls. So read on to discover how to tell if you have 3C hair, how to care for it, and the best products for 3C hair.

woman smiling with 3c hair type

What Is the 3c Hair Type?

The Andre Walker Hair Typing System categorizes straight hair as Type 1, wavy hair as Type 2, The Andre Walker Hair Typing System categorizes straight hair as Type 1, wavy hair as Type 2, curly hair as Type 3, and coily hair as Type 4. The letters describe how tightly the curls are formed: A has the loosest curls and C has the tightest curl pattern.

3C is the last curly hair type, but all curly hair types above type 3B share some similarities, so 3C hair can look a little like 3B or 4A hair.  It’s also common to have a mix of curl types which means that type 3C hair may have a few 3B or 4A strands mixed in.

3C hair has plenty of volume and spring, with curls about the width of a pencil or straw. The strands have a classic corkscrew curl shape, and a clear S-shaped curl that remains even after they are stretched. You may have fine, medium, or coarse hair or a mix of hair textures.

You’ll also find that 3C hair is prone to dryness, frizz, and damage because your natural oils struggle to travel down the entire length of the ringlets. The curves and bends in 3C curls also cause more shrinkage than in many other hair types.

This natural hair type is also prone to trichonodosis, the scientific name for fairy knots. This happens when a single strand gets tangled up with itself and is more likely to occur with curly or coily hair types. Fairy knots cause breakage, but you can prevent this by following the care tips below.

3c Hair vs Other Hair Types

It can sometimes be tricky to be sure if you have the 3C hair type or one of its closest neighbors.

3B hair has loose curls compared to 3C hair, while Type 4A hair has tight coils about the same circumference as a crochet needle. Type 4A curls have better curl definition than Type 3C and they also experience more shrinkage.

How to Care For 3c Hair

3C hair needs careful attention, but with a little effort, you can achieve a beautiful mass of soft and defined curls.

You may need to make a few changes to your care routine, and you’ll also need to determine if your hair has high or low porosity. Our Ultimate Guide to Hair Porosity will help you to decide which you have.

High-porosity hair absorbs moisture easily but struggles to retain moisture, so a hydrating lotion or leave-in moisturizing gel is a great choice. On the other hand, moisture tends to sit on the surface of low-porosity hair so avoid heavy oils and butters as they can cause product build-up.

It might take a while before you see an improvement in your curls, so stick with your 3C haircare routine. But if you notice something isn’t working, feel free to try something different.

Here are some handy tips to help you care for 3C hair:

Cleanse your 3C Hair Regularly

Some people prefer to wash 3C hair once a week, while others prefer to wash twice or three times per week.

However often you choose to wash your hair, it’s essential to avoid sulfates, which can make your 3C hair even drier. So look for a moisturizing shampoo which is also sulfate-free. This will remove dirt and product residue without stripping away the natural oils that keep your scalp and hair healthy.

You could also try co-washing, which uses a regular conditioner or co-wash instead of shampoo. But this might not be suitable for low-porosity hair, which needs thorough cleansing to avoid product build-up.

woman shampooing hair in the shower

Add Moisture

Curly hair can struggle with moisture retention and the curlier your hair, the drier it is likely to be.

That’s because the shape of your ringlets stops your scalp’s natural oils from reaching the full length of the hair strand. Adding moisture to your hair is vital for good hair health, so every 3c hair routine needs to include high-quality moisturizing products.

Using a leave-in conditioner regularly will improve daily hydration, but don’t use one that contains hydrolyzed protein too frequently, as this can add to product build-up.

A regular deep conditioner will drench your hair strands with moisture, especially if you incorporate heat or steam into your deep conditioning treatment. Hair oils absorb well into the strands, so look for products containing ingredients like jojoba, avocado, or castor oil.

And a curl cream is fantastic for reducing frizz and defining your curl pattern.

The Right Brush

A good brush can define curls and really make them pop. But it’s important to choose the right hairbrush and avoid brushing your hair when it’s dry, as this causes frizz.

So give the boar-bristle brushes a miss and instead go for a detangling brush with nylon bristles and soft tips.

Heatless Styling Techniques

3C natural hair tends to be dry, and excessive exposure to heat and chemicals can affect curl patterns. The only way to remedy this is to cut your damaged locks, so avoiding hot styling tools as much as possible is essential.

Air drying is best for your 3C curls, but if you want to use your blow dryer, attach a good diffuser and use a heat protectant before heat styling. Heatless styling methods like CurlFormers and banding can reduce shrinkage without using flat irons.

If you really must reach for the flat iron, it’s important to try and minimize heat damage. So avoid the highest setting but be sure to choose a temperature that will straighten your hair in one pass.

Proper Trims and Cuts

Regular trims are essential for healthy hair growth and will help to restore the natural curl pattern to damaged locks. Scheduling a trim every 8-10 weeks is fine for most people.

Don’t be tempted to miss regular trims just because you want to retain length on your locks. The dry, split ends will gradually split further up the hair shaft, causing breakage and eventually making a drastic chop necessary.

And be sure to see a curl specialist to cut your hair for the best shape.

Pineappling

Curly hair is easily damaged while you’re asleep, but taking good care of your locks can avoid tangling and breakage. So before you go to sleep, gather your curls up in a high pineapple on top of your head.

This will protect your hair from damage and also keep your style looking great for longer.

Sleep Protective Gear

You can also protect your curls even more by sleeping with your hair in a silk or satin bonnet or wrapping it in a silk scarf. Sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase is another great way to protect your hair overnight.

This works well because silk doesn’t absorb moisture the same way that cotton materials do. The silky texture of the fabric also produces less friction, which cuts down on tangles and frizz.

Be sure to choose pure silk because the manufactured silk-like fabrics won’t work in the same way.

Handle with Care

It might be hard to resist playing with your ringlets, but your 3c curls are more fragile than other type 3 hair. Twisting and pulling the strands can easily cause breakage and frizz, so handle them with care.

Detangling is easier on wet hair, and this is one time when it’s OK to run your fingers through your hair. But be sure to saturate your hair with a detangler or conditioner first so that your fingers glide easily through the strands.

Classifying Different Types of 3C Hair Textures

As well as knowing your hair type and porosity, it’s also important to know your hair texture.

Hair texture types describe the width of each hair, rather than how many you have. So you could have very fine hair but a lot of it, so it looks voluminous despite its fine texture.

3C hair can be fine, medium, or coarse, and knowing which you have will help you to choose the right products to care for it.

How to tell if you have Fine, Medium, or Coarse 3C Hair texture

You can test to see if your hair is fine, medium, or coarse by rolling a single strand of hair between your fingers:

  • If you have fine hair, it’ll be difficult to even feel the strand at all
  • If you can feel the strand, you have medium hair
  • If you can feel a thick strand about the width of a piece of sewing cotton, you have coarse hair

Fine hair can easily be weighed down with product residue, so you’ll need to select lightweight products that won’t cause a build-up. Coarse hair needs careful attention to stop it from looking dry and frizzy; see our Guide to Coarse Hair for more care tips.

Cuts and Hairstyles for 3C Hair

Styling 3C curly hair can take a little extra time and effort, but it’ll be worth it when you see your beautiful ringlets.

It’s crucial to pick the right products, and some great styling products to add to your 3C haircare routine include:

Try to avoid excessive heat exposure as much as possible. If you must use your blow dryer or hot styling tools, apply a good heat protectant first and use as little heat as possible.

Protective styles are ideal for giving your curls a break every now and then, and also help to retain curl definition. Just be careful not to choose a protective style that is too tight, as these can damage your cuticles and hairline. Buns, updos, and twists are great protective styles for long 3C hair.

  • Wash and Go – an excellent option for beautiful curls. Focus on applying the right products to your ringlets.
  • Top Bun – ideal for days when you can’t be bothered to do much to your hair. It will stop you from messing with your curls as well!
  • Half Up-do – perfect when you don’t want to tie back all your beautiful curls. 3C hair tends to be thick, so it’ll still look fantastic with half of it pulled back.

FAQs

Still got questions about how to care for 3C hair? Here are some of your most frequently asked questions:

How Do You Properly Apply Products to 3c Hair?

It’s generally best to comb or finger-rake conditioners through 3C hair, then you can apply styling products with praying hands. You could also try two other techniques called shingling and plopping.

Shingling is a technique for applying a curl cream, gel, or leave-in conditioner, where you separate your curls with your fingers and smooth the product onto each curl.

The plopping method involves applying your hair product to wet or damp hair and then gathering your waves, curls, or coils at the top of your head. Then you wrap them up in a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt to protect your 3C curl pattern as your hair dries.

This method cuts down on drying time and is gentler than a blow dryer, so your curls will look healthier and more defined.

Understanding your hair texture and curl pattern is the key to good hair health. It will help you to choose the right products and styles to ensure your hair looks great.

If you have 3A curls, and sometimes it’s hard to be sure, your loose curls can look beautifully glossy and bouncy. But they can also be prone to dryness and frizz, so it’s essential to make sure that you treat your 3A curls the right way.

Knowing which hair type you have is handy, but it’s also important to remember that your individual locks are unique. So it’s more useful to know your hair texture and the density and porosity of your hair strands, as this will help you choose the perfect products to suit your hair.

Our quick Curly Hair Type Quiz is a handy way to learn more about your own hair.

This guide will show you how to tell if you have the 3A hair type, the best hair products for 3A hair, and a curly hair routine that keeps your hair looking luscious.

What Is Type 3A Hair?

3A is the first curly hair type in the Andre Walker Hair Typing System. 3A curls are fully formed ringlets, but the curl pattern is pretty wide and loose compared to other curly hair types. The curls are springy and loopy with a natural bounce and shine that looks fantastic when you wear your hair down.

If you have this curly hair type, your natural curls will be well-defined, but you’ll notice that they’re prone to frizz and dryness, which makes them easily damaged. 3A hair has less voluminous curls than other type 3 curls, so it can sometimes look a bit flat, but the risk of frizz is lower than with type 3B or type 3C hair.

What Does 3A Hair Look Like?

The 3A hair type has the loosest curls of the three curly hair types. If you have type 3A hair, your curl type could include a mix of ringlet curls and type 2c waves, and you might find a few tighter type 3b curls in the mix.

But generally, your curl shape will be big and loopy, with ringlets about the size of a piece of sidewalk chalk. You’ll also find it easy to change the look of 3A hair by loosening the ringlets into waves or using a diffuser attachment to tighten your curls.

What Is the Difference Between the 3A Hair Type and Others?

Type 3A hair is the first of the curly hair types, and it can sometimes be tricky to know for sure if your hair is type 3A or one of the other hair types.

It’s pretty simple to tell the difference between 2C and 3A locks, as the 2C hair type has wavy hair rather than complete ringlets. But you might find it harder to tell the difference between types 3A and 3B, as that is more about how tight the curls are and the texture of the hair strands. 3B curls are tighter, more spiral-shaped ringlets, but you will often find some S-shaped strands mixed in with type 3A loose curls.

Taking care of 3A Hair

The loose spirals of the 3A hair type need a little TLC as they can be dry and prone to frizziness. Your curl type can also lack definition, and you’ll need to take special care if you want them to look their best.

It’s not difficult to take care of 3A hair, so here are a few tips on how to show your curly hair type some love:

Limit and Avoid Chemical Exposure

Chemical exposure is a common cause of damage to hair type 3a, and it can change the shape of your curls as well as making your hair dry and frizzy.

Sulfates and parabens have a drying effect on hair strands. As curly hair types struggle with dryness more than other types, it’s best to avoid hair care products that contain them. Instead, look for gentle cleansers that won’t strip the natural oils from your hair, and only shampoo your type 3A hair once or twice a week. This will help to keep your curls looking gorgeous.

Limited or Silicone Free Products

Limit the use of silicone in your hair care products wherever possible. Although silicones give shine and flexibility in the short run, they also cause a buildup in the hair that leads to dryness and breakage.

Products that contain natural resins and plant-based oils are a good alternative, as these will create bouncy curls without the harmful effects of silicones.

Deep Condition

Curly hair needs moisture to stop it from looking dry and brittle, so a good deep conditioning product is essential to repair damaged hair and prevent further damage.

It also helps to oil your curly locks once a week to keep your strands supple and lock in nourishment and hydration.

Sleep With Silk or Satin Fabrics

A silk or satin pillowcase will help to prevent tangling while you sleep and minimize frizz. You can also use a silk or satin scarf or bonnet to protect your locks overnight.

Limit Washes

Washing hair too frequently makes it drier, so try to wash your hair once or twice a week at most. This will allow your scalp’s natural oils to moisturize your hair, which will make it look much healthier and reduce breakage.

Scrunching is your friend

After you’ve cleansed and conditioned your hair, scrunching will add curl definition to make your 3A locks look fabulous. It’s super easy to do – just put some product in your hands, flip your head upside-down and scrunch your hair upwards towards your head.

Remember to go gently; you want to create definition, not frizz. And once you’ve applied your product, leave your hair alone as it dries. Playing with your curls as they dry will turn your spiral curls frizzy and dry.

The Best Products for 3A hair

It’s important to look out for shampoos and conditioners that are suitable for 3A hair if you want your curls to look their best.

Hydrating conditioners will help to keep your hair moisturized, and a leave in conditioner is particularly handy, especially if you plan to blow dry your locks. Serums, creams, and hair oils will help reduce dryness while minimizing frizz and keeping your curls defined.

3a Curly Hair Products

A clarifying shampoo that’s suitable for curly hair will cleanse your locks without stripping the natural oils. Kinky Curly Come Clean and Carol’s Daughter Wash Day Delight (for really dry hair) are good brands to look out for, but Malibu C Un-Do-Goo is the best clarifying shampoo out there.

Top Pick
Malibu C Un-Do-Goo Clarifying Shampoo
$17.00 ($1.89 / Fl Oz)

This is my top pick for clarifying all hair types. It removes buildup the best and is still gentle on curly hair.

Best 3A Hairstyles

There are many haircuts and ways to style type 3A hair, whether you prefer long or short hair and whether you like to style your hair up or leave it loose.

Length and Cuts

When it comes to the length of your hair, 3A curls give you masses of options. Whether you prefer long or short hair, there’s sure to be a hairstyle to suit you perfectly.

Short 3A Hair

Short 3A curly hair looks fantastic, and as long as you use a good curl defining product, you can definitely rock a short style. Avoid taking your hair length above the ear, as your curls can make it fan out like a triangle.

Shoulder-Length 3A Hair

Shoulder length can be the perfect length for 3A curls. This length gives plenty of movement and volume to 3A hair without being so long that it weighs your curls down.

Long 3a Hair

Defining your ringlets will help your long 3A curly hair look its best. It might be tricky to achieve on wash days, but with a little extra time and the right products, you can have beautifully defined curls.

Curly Bangs

Bangs are still on-trend, and curly bangs look fantastic, especially with your loose curl pattern. So why not give them a try?

Styling 3A hair

The 3A hair type can generally wear most hairstyles that are suitable for straight and wavy hair types as well as styles for curly hair. It is vital to give your 3A curls a little extra TLC, as the hair strands can easily be damaged. Avoid using cotton towels to dry hair as they will cause friction and frizz, and apply a curl-defining cream or mousse to wet hair to bring out the best in your curls.

A low heat setting and a diffuser will help avoid heat damage from your blow dryer. Always apply a heat protectant before using a curling iron or other hot styling tools on your delicate curls.

Options for styling your natural hair range from a low ponytail, which adds volume and keeps your curls out of your face, to a textured top-knot or even a versatile half up-do. With your gorgeous spiral curls, you can change your look with ease!

Blowouts for Straightening

If you want straight hair for a change, flat irons work well on 3A curls, but a blowout will give your hair more volume and bounce than a flat iron.

3A Curly Hair & The Curly Girl Method

If you want to keep your 3A curls in tip top shape, the best place to start is the Curly Girl Method.

This is a great way to care for wavy, curly, or coily locks. You’ll need to use a little trial and error to find your perfect Curly Girl Method routine, but here are the basics:

curly girl method before and after showing 2b hair and 3a hair
My hair changed from 2b to 2c/3a with the curly girl method.

Curly Girl Method

Reset: A clarifying shampoo will clear any buildup of product residue and allow your hair to absorb the other hair care products better.

Cleanse: Regular shampoos can dry out curly hair, so the Curly Girl Method recommends sulfate-free formulations and cleansing techniques like co-washing to get your hair clean.

Condition: Wash-off, leave-in, and deep conditioners will give your locks maximum hydration to prevent tangling, dryness and breakage.

Style: Apply curl enhancing products to wet hair, using your hands to rake the product through and gently scrunch the curls up towards your roots.

Dry: Curly hair is prone to breakage, so it’s important to be gentle when drying your locks. Air-drying or using a diffuser to blow dry your hair will minimize heat damage.

Maintenance and Routine

Co-washing will help to keep your curly hair looking great. If you follow a simple routine, you can keep your curls looking great with just one to two co-washes per week, with a reset every few weeks to prevent product buildup.

After cleansing your hair, gently pat dry to remove excess water and apply styling and hydrating products. Sleeping on silk or satin pillowcases and piling your curls into a high bun or pineapple will keep them looking great overnight. Then, you can revive your curls in the morning with a spritz of water and conditioner mixed together.

Other Care Factors for Natural 3A Hair

The 3A hair type has fine strands that can easily be damaged, so here are some maintenance and care tips to help you maintain healthy, beautiful 3A Hair.

Hydrate and Protect

Type 3A hair tends to be dry because your curls make it difficult for the oils from your scalp to work down the hair shaft. Damage from heat and sunlight and using products that contain sulfates or parabens can also add to this problem.

So it’s essential to hydrate your locks regularly with lightweight hydrating conditioners that won’t weigh your fine 3A curls down. Leave-in conditioner works well to give lasting hydration that reduces damage and breakage.

Squish to condish is also an excellent way to get moisture into the hair for soft, frizz free curls.

Using a heat protectant spray every time you use hot tools and wearing a hat in the sun are great ways to protect your hair and prevent dryness. Combing your 3A hair regularly will help to spread the sebum from your roots to the tips of your hair. But avoid using brushes, except for a detangling brush, as regular brushes can create frizz.

Trimming

Regular trims help to keep your locks looking their best. If you wear your hair curly most of the time and use heat styling or chemicals sparingly, a trim every 10-12 weeks is ideal.

You should also head to the salon if you notice split ends, as these are more susceptible to damage and breakage, which can make your hair look thinner. If your hair looks dry at the ends, breaks easily, or generally looks limp and lifeless, these are also signs that it’s time for a trim.

Scalp Treatment

Some type curly hair can have a scalp that can easily get clogged up with product residue and excess sebum. Healthy hair needs a healthy scalp, so it’s a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo at least once a month. This will help to remove any buildup on your scalp, leaving it clean and healthy.

Read more: 7 Best Clarifying Shampoos for Curly Hair

A good hydrating or moisturizing conditioner will add moisture to your locks without making your scalp oily.

There are also scalp oils and serums that target scalp problems. You may want to consider adding one of these to your routine if you suffer from scalp problems.

Porosity Levels

Hair porosity measures how easily your hair can absorb and hold moisture, which will affect your choice of products.

Low porosity hair needs hydrating products with a lightweight texture so you don’t get product buildup. Emollients like argan oil and humectants like aloe vera will work well on your locks.

If your hair has high porosity, you’ll still need lightweight products, but they must also be rich enough to seal in moisture. Coconut oil is a great example of a product that will suit high porosity 3A hair.

The Bottom Line on Caring for 3A hair

Knowing your hair type, as well as your hair texture, porosity, and density is the key to healthy hair. It will help you to pick the best hair products and techniques to keep your locks looking fantastic.

If you have 3A hair, you simply need to follow the tips in this guide and experiment with products to keep your curls looking bouncy, glossy, and full of life.

Type 2A hair has loose waves with just the right amount of natural volume, and it just needs a little touch of styling product to look effortlessly glamorous. But without proper care, 2A hair can also look flat and lifeless, or frizzy with split ends.

Understanding your hair type can really help you to manage any problems that you might have with your 2A hair. In this guide, we’ll show you how to tell if you have 2A hair and give you some easy styling tips to help you pamper your wavy locks.

What Is 2a Hair Type?

Type 2A hair is one of the subcategories of the Andre Walker hair typing system, which ranges from the straightest (1A) to the tightest coils (4C). The number 2 indicates that you have wavy hair – the other types are 1 (straight), 3 (curly), and 4 (coily). The letters are used to describe the tightness of the wave or curl patterns, so a is the loosest and c is the tightest curl pattern within each of the 4 hair types.

Type 2A is a wavy hair type, with the loosest wave pattern out of the three wavy hair types. The strands range from fine to coarse, with straight roots and loose S-shaped waves starting from a few inches down. This can make your wavy locks look flat and lacking body, but a little careful styling will help to define the soft waves.

woman with 2a hair

If you’re not sure what hair type you have, our simple hair type quiz can help you to work it out.

Knowing your curl type only gives you a general description of the kind of hair you have. Everyone’s hair is unique and it’s more important to know your own hair’s porosity, density, and texture. This will allow you to tailor your hair care routine to keep your mane looking its best.

Benefits of Type 2a Hair

There’s a lot to love about your 2A waves, especially because their natural texture creates plenty of body and movement.  You won’t have to work hard to make 2A locks look gorgeous, just adding a little curl definer to damp hair and letting it air dry will be enough to bring out the beauty of your waves.

Type 2A can be very low-maintenance as long as you care for it properly. It can lie a bit flat at the roots, but with the right hair care routine and products, your loose waves can look naturally tousled.

And because your roots are quite flat, your hair is less likely to be dry along the full length of your strands. So as long as you care for the ends, wavy hair types don’t usually have the problems with dryness that curly or coily hair has.

Challenges of Type 2a Hair

Type 2A hair can easily get weighed down by products or become dry and damaged by over-washing. Excessive use of hot tools or over-brushing can also cause split ends and even breakages.

2A strands tend to fall flat at the roots and then wavy from the mid-lengths. Those waves stop your scalp’s natural oils from traveling down the strands, so you might have oily roots and dry ends.

And type 2A hair can have an inconsistent wave pattern that needs curl-enhancing products to get the look that you want. Simply air drying your hair without adding any product can cause your flat roots and irregular waves to look more messy than tousled.

Similar Hair Types

The two types that are most similar to 2A hair are types 1C and 2B. If you have wavy tresses, you might not be sure which hair type you have, so here’s how to tell the difference between them:

1C

1C can look very similar to 2A hair. It is fairly straight hair with a slight wave pattern underneath but usually there is minimal frizz. 1C hair is easier to straighten and has more volume than 2A hair, whereas 2A has more prominent waves than 1C hair.

2B

2B hair has a similar wave pattern to 2A type hair, but the waves are more defined. It lies flat at the crown and defined S-shaped waves start from the midlength of the strands. You will need to work harder to straighten 2B hair.

How to Care For 2a Hair

If you have type 2 hair, you’re probably used to dealing with oily roots and dry ends. The porosity of your hair affects how dry it gets, and there are three categories: high, medium, and low porosity.

Wavy, curly, or coily hair types all tend to have medium to high porosity, which means they have open cuticles that allow moisture to escape. Knowing the porosity of your own hair will help you to select products that will hydrate your locks so they’ll look their best.

Here are a few tips to help you care for 2A tresses:

Washing And Brushing 2a Hair

Shampoo can be very drying so it’s best to wash type 2A hair once every few days, using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to add moisture to your locks. Focus the shampoo more on your scalp than the mid-lengths and ends of your wavy locks, as these tend to be drier than the roots.

A lot of people use too much conditioner on 2A hair, so make sure you’re only using a quarter-sized dollop or less if your hair is short. A final rinse with cold water will smooth the hair cuticles, sealing in moisture and giving even better shine.

Towel dry your hair gently with a microfiber or t-shirt hair towel, but avoid rubbing the strands as this can disrupt the curl pattern. Try plopping to encourage clumps and curl formation.

Use a detangling product like a leave in and a rake comb to get rid of any stubborn knots before brushing and styling, as this will help to reduce breakages. Rake and scrunch in some styling product to enhance your waves. A good mousse or gel will help reduce frizz and hold your style.

If your hair does start to look greasy between washes, a little dry shampoo on your roots will help to refresh it.

Hydration

Textured hair strands naturally tend to lack moisture, which is why your 2A waves are prone to frizz. So it’s really important to make hydration a priority and avoid anything that could dry your hair out even more.

Avoid heavy creams and choose lightweight moisturizing products like a leave-in conditioner instead to help hydrate your wavy locks. You should definitely use a good heat protectant before using any kind of hot tool.

A weekly deep-conditioning treatment, oil, or hair mask before shampooing will add moisture back into your waves and keep them looking their best. For maximum hydration, put a shower cap on after applying the treatment to let it penetrate the hair shaft even more.

Sleep Protection

Your wavy strands can easily be damaged, even when you’re asleep at night. Cotton pillowcases will draw moisture out of the strands and pull at them as you toss and turn. Switching to silk or satin pillowcases is an easy way to protect your hair, or you could wrap your hair in a satin scarf instead.

Drying

Using a hair towel to plop your hair dry is gentler than rubbing it dry with a standard terrycloth towel, and will help to avoid stretching or tangling wet hair.

Best Method

Adding heat to wavy hair types often creates frizz, so let your 2A hair dry naturally as often as possible for beautiful tousled locks. If you need to dry your hair faster, blow drying with a diffuser will spread the hot air more evenly across your entire head and help to avoid heat damage. Diffusing also provides more volume.

Over-styling is another common problem for people with 2A hair, but air drying your hair will help you to understand your hair texture and manage your curls better. This will help you to style your waves more confidently and use less styling product on them.

Tips and Tricks

2A hair looks great when it’s styled naturally, and you only need to apply a curl-enhancing cream or gel to damp hair before scrunching it into gentle waves and letting it air-dry or diffusing.

Apply your styling products to wet hair before plopping with your hair towel. This ensures minimal frizz and locks in hydration. Then you can air dry or diffuse.

2A Wavy Hair Routine

This 2A wavy hair routine is a good example of how to style your waves for more definition and a longer lasting style.

For those days when you want to elevate your waves to the next level, here are a few extra tips and tricks to try out.

  • Using a curling iron on fully dry hair will add volume and bounce to your waves, giving you loose curls with a more elegant appearance.
  • Try a blowout with a round brush or paddle brush to straighten your hair and give it masses of touchable volume.
  • Pin curls are a fabulous, heat-free way to transform your waves into well defined curls. Leave the curls in place overnight for the best effect.
  • Sock curls is another popular heat-free method of creating soft waves.

Try The Curly Girl Method

If you have not been wearing your hair in its natural texture for a while you can try doing the curly girl method to revive your natural waves and curls.

The curly girl method, or CGM for short, is a special way to care for your curls to enhance their natural texture and improve the health of your hair. Over time, your hair will curl a little more and you’ll spend less time styling it.

My hair used to be mostly 2A and 2B and now it’s much curlier, mostly 2C and 3A, thanks to the curly girl method.

How to Style 2a Hair

The texture and loose waves of 2A hair mean that it can be easier to style than most other types. It suits a wide range of styles from pixie cuts to shoulder-length bobs, and you can choose whether to leave your hair naturally wavy, straighten it or enhance the curl with defining products or a curling iron.

You can have lots of fun changing the look of your wavy 2A hair, but you do need the right cut, hot tools, and styling products.

Women

There are a few things you can do to make styling your 2A hair easier:

  • Choose the right length – a blunt, shoulder-length cut will show off your waves and reduce frizz.
  • Try a deep side part – fine hair can look flat and lifeless, but a deep side part will give it an instant lift.
  • Get beachy waves – your natural waves lend themselves to a tousled, beachy look, which is really easy to achieve with some sea salt spray and a curling iron if needed.

Men

If you struggle to style your wavy hair, it might be easier to keep your hair shorter. Longer hair gets more weighed down by styling products and natural oils from your scalp, which can spoil the look of your waves.

If you have thick, wavy hair, you could ask your barber to reduce the bulk with thinning scissors or a razor.

Hair Type 2A FAQs

If you’ve still got questions about your 2A hair type, here are some of the most popular questions that we get asked:

How Do You Know What Your Hair Type Is?

If you have wavy hair but you’re not quite sure which exact type, how can you tell what hair type you have? Here’s how to tell the difference between the different wavy hair types:

  • 2A hair has a slightly wavy texture and the least prominent waves
  • 2B hair has beachy waves that can be prone to dryness
  • 2C hair has tight waves that are close to curls, it can also tend to be frizzy

It’s normal to have a mix of curl patterns anyway, so may have more than one. Don’t stress trying to find the one pattern you have. Knowing it won’t change anything either way.

And don’t forget that when you are choosing products and styling techniques, it’s more important to know your hair’s texture, density, and porosity than your hair type.

Still not sure what hair type you have? Try our easy hair type quiz to find out for sure.

What Are the Best Products for 2A/2B Hair?

Wavy hair isn’t usually prone to dryness but it still needs gentle treatment. It’s important to avoid drying ingredients like alcohol and parabens to avoid stripping moisture from your 2A or 2B locks.

To pamper your waves and combat frizz, look for products that are packed with nourishing, moisture-rich ingredients like shea butter or argan oil.

Check the products for 2a hair section above for specific recommendations.

How to Make 2A Hair Curlier: Is It Possible?

You can enhance your wavy hair by using curl-defining products that are suitable for type 2 hair. 2A hair tends to struggle with flat roots so a volumizing product will help to give it extra body and vitality, or you could add a texturizing mousse to help make it look thicker.

A curl activator, or curl enhancer, can also encourage more wave formation to make your 2A hair curlier. And a gel will hold the style longer.

Don’t forget to use your diffuser attachment on your blow dryer to accentuate your 2A curls and lock moisture in for better frizz control. Always use heat protectant before you start drying your hair and a finishing spray will help to set your styled hair.

Fine Hair vs Medium Hair: What’s the Difference?

The terms fine, medium, or coarse hair describe three different hair textures. Fine hair has strands that are smaller in width than medium hair.

You can tell the difference between fine vs medium vs coarse hair by rubbing a single strand between your fingers. If you can’t feel the strand, you have fine hair. If you can feel the strand, your hair strands are medium and it will feel thick and coarse if you have coarse hair.

Final Thoughts

Although your type 2A hair isn’t as curly as some of the other hair types, it’s still important to know your hair type. Combined with other factors like its porosity and texture, this will allow you to tailor your 2A hair routine and choose products and techniques that bring out the beauty of your 2A hair’s soft waves every day.
