One of the questions I get most often is how to sleep with curly hair, so that you don’t need to refresh every day, especially from those new to the curly girl method. Sleeping with curly hair seems to be something many curlies and wavies struggle with.

If you want to know how to sleep with curly hair, you have 4 simple options:

  1. go to bed with completely dry hair that has ‘set’
  2. use something to protect your hair like a buff or silk pillowcase
  3. try a protective hairstyle like a ‘pineapple’
  4. use a scalp treatment serum and/or dry shampoo for scalp issues

Successfully preserving curls overnight hair is not as hard as you think. Let’s go over these 4 options so you can see how easy it is to keep your curls overnight and spend less time fussing with your hair in the mornings.

How To Keep Curls Overnight

1. Go to bed with completely “set” hair

On wash day, I make sure to wash my hair early enough that it is completely dry before I fall asleep.

I also try to wait at least an hour after it has dried for the style to set before putting on the buff.

This means I usually wash in the afternoon and I try not to go out so that my style doesn’t get ruined. That’s not always possible but it helps me have lasting results.

The way your hair turns out on wash day is very important because that’s the style that will lock in and what you’ll be preserving for the next few days.

Some people wait to scrunch out the crunch until the morning which helps your curls stay put overnight.

Experiment both ways and see what works for your hair. Leaving the cast on longer gives me more definition but it kills my volume so I scrunch out the crunch soon after my hair has dried.

2. Protect your hair at night with something like a buff and a silk pillowcase

The most important step is using a buff every night (pictured below). This is the one thing that makes the biggest difference. I held off on trying this for years because I didn’t think it would do much but I wish I had done it sooner.

I took a poll on my Instagram stories recently, and it seems that using a buff and silk or satin pillowcase are the most common ways curlies protect their hair at night.

I use the same buff maybe 2-3 nights because they do stretch out. I make sure to pull it down over my ears so that it stays on all night.

The buff will slide up and possibly come off so I also have a silk pillowcase. I have one that’s only silk on one side which makes it affordable. You can read more about the benefits of silk pillowcases here.

Some people struggle with the buff staying on their heads while they sleep. In this case, you can clip the sides above your ears to try to hold it in place.

It’s even more important to use a silk or satin pillowcase if you can’t keep your buff on.

Silk scarves and bonnets are other options aside from a buff that you can use to protect your hair while you sleep.

3. Try a protective hairstyle

Protective styles may work for you instead of a buff.

Pineapple, medusa clipping, and a bun or braid are some ideas. Experiment with these and see which works best for you.

Because my hair is so thin and easily disrupted, I can’t put up in anything without ruining the curl pattern so I just pull it in a buff and leave it like that.

A pineapple is pulling it all into a ponytail at the top of your head. Some people wrap a silk scarf similar to the way the buff is used as well.

I have also seen some people sleep in the plop, either wet or dry. I do not recommend sleeping in a wet plop because it’s bad to leave your hair wet for so long. But a dry plop might work for you.

4. Use a scalp treatment or dry shampoo for scalp issues

I like to use the Briogeo Scalp Revival treatment serum on my scalp. This serum is water based, not oil, and it helps to moisturize and balance my scalp to reduce itching and flaking.

You can see how I apply it in this hair routine video. I basically apply a drop to my hands, emulsify and rub all over my scalp in sections. This stuff has really made a difference in letting me go longer between washes.

If you tend to have oily roots you can apply dry shampoo before bed.

I use the Scalp Revival line because it helps my scalp and I usually apply some on day 3 and 4. Massage it in well and it absorbs overnight so that by the morning your hair looks fresh.

Delilah using briogeo scalp revival to wash hair less often

Optional: Do scalp massages

I also do a scalp massage using this massager after applying a little more of the scalp treatment on day 3 or 4. This helps keep my scalp calm and feeling fresh. If your scalp gets itchy or oily then this can help with that.

I usually do this at night before putting on the buff but I have done it in the morning if I feel I need it.

I like to do a quick scalp massage in the morning without the serum after taking my hair out of the buff as well. This will help fluff your hair and resettle it.

Delilah using a scalp massager

So these are the basics on how to sleep with curly hair to keep it looking decent for several days.

Like I said before, the hair buff is the most important one so if you only take one piece of advice from this post, it should be to at least try that.

Sleeping with curly hair doesn’t have to ruin your hair!

Tips for Fine and Thin Curly Hair

If you specifically have fine or thin curly hair as I do, it does better with less manipulation. Remember that fine hair is more prone to damage and more easily loses its curl pattern so you need to be more delicate with it.

I find that my hair does better with just a buff versus using a hair tie or combining the two. I don’t stuff my ends into the buff but you can try that and see how it works. I’ve tried sleeping without a buff on my silk pillowcase and it’s nowhere near as effective as the hair buff.

I think the buff just holds the hair in place so well and there is very little friction so that’s why it works so well. So if you have thin or fine curly hair give a buff or wrap a try without a hair tie or bun.

Wondering if your hair is in need of a protein treatment or how to do one? If you’re on your curly hair journey you have definitely heard talk about protein moisture balance and protein treatments for curly hair.

But what is a protein treatment, how can you tell if you need one, and which products should you try? And, more importantly, how can you have protein moisture balance? Read on for all the details.

In a hurry? Check out our top picks:

What is a protein treatment?

Our hair is primarily made up of the protein keratin. Keratin is what keeps it healthy, strong, and full of elasticity.

Damage to our hair from the environment, processing, and styling causes the keratin to break down.

A protein treatment is a treatment that infuses a boost of protein into your hair. It works to strengthen and repair the keratin.

Benefits of a protein treatment for hair

Protein treatments offer several benefits, especially for damaged hair. If your hair is chemically processed or has heat damage then most likely protein treatments will help improve the health of your hair.

Some benefits of a protein treatment are:

  • strengthens hair
  • reduces frizz
  • improves curl definition
  • adds volume
  • smoothes the hair cuticle
  • increases shine
  • helps grow hair longer
  • increases elasticity

How do you know if you need to do a protein treatment?

If your curls are limp, frizzy, don’t hold their curl for long, or feel too soft then it likely needs a boost of protein.

The Stretch Test

Try the stretch test to check for the elasticity of your hair.

In order to test for elasticity, take a single strand of hair between both thumbs and forefingers and stretch the hair (it may be necessary to detach a hair from the client’s head) (source).

Healthy hair will stretch roughly an extra 1/3 its length and return to its original size. Damaged hair may not return fully to its original size, whilst dry or brittle hair may break when put under tension (source).

If your hair snaps quickly, it needs moisture. If it stretches a lot, it needs more protein.

protein moisture balance chart

Usually, low porosity hair dislikes too much protein while high porosity likes more protein. This is not an absolute, as every person is different and the ingredients in your products will have an effect on how often you will need to do protein treatments.

If you don’t know your hair porosity, then read this post.

Now, these are some of the same reasons you would need to clarify so take that into consideration. Ideally, you should be clarifying on a regular basis so that shouldn’t be the case.

You should also check out these 11 reasons your hair is frizzy if you’re having frizz problems.

Still not sure if your hair needs protein or not? Try a rice water rinse first. Rice water is a protein mimicker and will provide similar benefits. If your hair responds well to the rinse, then it probably needs protein.

How to identify proteins in Hair products

Many products will advertise if they’re protein heavy with words like “strengthening” or “repairing”. Check the ingredients list to find proteins.

If you’re not sure what to look for, some of the most common proteins found in products will be listed as the following:

  • hydrolyzed protein
  • keratin
  • oat flour
  • soy
  • collagen
  • amino acids
  • silk
  • wheat protein

Quick tip: anything “hydrolyzed” is a protein

You could also simply use http://www.isitcg.com/ and paste the ingredients list in. It will tell you exactly which ingredients are proteins so you don’t have to figure it out.

You’ll know a product is really a protein treatment if there is at least one protein in the top 5 ingredients.

If you prefer ready to purchase products then there are a few protein treatments to choose from:

EVOLVh UltraRepair Reconstructing Masque

This is my absolute favorite for my fine hair because it is lighter on the moisture, which is hard to find in protein treatments. Many times they load up on the moisturizing ingredients to combat the extra protein.

Top Pick
EVOLVh UltraRepair Hair Masque
$21.00 ($10.50 / Fl Oz)

Lightweight moisture with a good amount of protein makes this mask a great pick for finer hair that tends to get weighed down by treatments.

Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab Salve

DIY protein treatments for curly hair

If you’re looking for DIY protein treatments, the only option I know of that actually works is a gelatin treatment. This is not vegan which I know is a concern for some people.

You might find recipes for DIY protein hair masks made with foods like eggs and yogurt but every hair expert I’ve heard speak on this has said that the molecules in these foods are too big to penetrate the hair shaft so these don’t actually work. This is the case for rice water too.

Many people recommend a rice water rinse as a protein treatment. Rice water rinses are amazing and offer similar benefits but it’s not truly a protein treatment. Regardless, it can be used for the same reasons and give you nearly the same results. Check out my rice water rinse routine here.

I have done the gelatin treatment once before and it was actually too much protein for my hair so I prefer to do the rice water rinse. If you want to try out the gelatin, check out this post.

How often should you do a protein treatment?

You have to be careful not to overdo it with protein. Too much protein can cause your hair to become brittle and dry and will cause breakage.

Protein treatments should be done only when your hair needs it and according to the product directions. Some can be used weekly while others are monthly.

Typical recommendations are once every 4-6 weeks for severely damaged hair. Less often for other hair types. Also, products that are more moisturizing and aren’t just straight-up protein can be used more often since they’re not as strong.

For deep conditioners and masks, weekly to monthly is fine. The more damaged your hair is, the more often you’ll need it.

If you’re using something more potent, then I would not do it more than once a month.

Pay close attention to how your hair looks and feels after the treatments to ensure you’re not overdoing it.

And if your hair feels dry and stiff after rinsing out the treatment, use a moisturizing deep conditioner.

Other Protein Products

You could also incorporate protein into your daily routine by using products with some protein in them. Then, you may not need to do protein treatments at all. I actually recommend this.

There is some experimenting with this though. Some hair loves protein in cleansers and conditioners but not in styling products (like mine!), and others prefer the opposite. You’ll have to find out what your hair likes.

So check your current products and see if they have protein. Think about how your hair does when you switch to products with more or less protein in them.

I recommend you keep a record when you’re testing out new products, tweaking your routine, or trying to figure out how certain ingredients affect your hair. This curl tracker is a great, easy way to keep track of this.

Curly journey journal printouts

Here are some popular curly girl products with protein in them:

Protein Overload

One thing you need to look out for is protein overload. This is the result of not getting enough moisture into your hair and can cause chemical damage to your hair. This is why I don’t recommend straight protein treatments be used regularly.

Signs of protein overload include:

  • Hair snaps off when you do the hair strand test
  • Unusually dry/lifeless and brittle
  • Less natural shine/luster than it used to have
  • Heavy shedding and tangles
  • Feels very straw like and stiff

If this happens you want to reduce the use of protein in your routine. Remove as much protein as you can and add in lots of moisture.

It can take weeks to overcome this so be diligent and patient.

What about OLAPLEX?

OLAPLEX 3 is a great product for color treated hair but it is not a protein treatment, it is a bond builder. It reduces breakage and visibly strengthens hair and it can be used along with protein treatments.

Protein Moisture Balance

Protein moisture balance seems tricky and I see questions every day from others wondering if their hair needs protein or moisture.

Don’t complicate this. Your hair needs both. Just keep a balanced routine and you shouldn’t have to worry about this.

Ensure your line of products is moisturizing and provides some protein, but not too much protein. Check the ingredients on all your products and make sure there is at least one protein in a few of your products.

I usually advise against using straight up protein like the drops or Aphogee because they’re so strong. It’s safer to cut down on moisture and add products with more protein in them if you want more protein.

Likewise, if your hair is in protein overload, cut back on the protein heavy products and add in more moisture.

Maintain a balanced routine and keep track of your treatments to keep the balance. Again, you can use the curl tracker to build and maintain a balanced routine.

The first step anytime you’re not sure what’s going on with your hair and you don’t know what it needs is to clarify.

After clarifying, check the chart above to see if your hair needs more protein or moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of protein treatments for curly hair?

Protein treatments can help strengthen your curls and improve their overall health. These treatments work by filling in gaps in the hair cuticle, which can result from chemical processes, heat damage, or general wear and tear. By repairing these gaps, protein treatments can prevent further damage, reduce breakage, and improve the elasticity and shine of your hair (source).

How often should I apply protein treatments to my curly hair?

The frequency of protein treatments varies depending on your hair type and the product you’re using; however, a general guideline would be once or twice a month. It is essential not to overuse protein treatments, as too much protein can make your hair brittle (source).

Can homemade protein treatments work for high porosity hair?

No, homemade protein treatments are not effective for high porosity hair. This is because food ingredients typically used in DIY recipes contain proteins that are too large to be absorbed by the cuticle (source).

How do I decide between protein and moisture treatments for frizzy curls?

It can be helpful to examine the signs that your hair is exhibiting. If your hair is dry, dull, and frizzy, it may benefit from a moisture treatment. On the other hand, if your hair is weak, breaks easily, or lacks elasticity, it could benefit from a protein treatment. Pay attention to how your hair reacts to the treatments and adjust accordingly.

But also remember that protein helps your hair hold onto moisture, which is why we need both.

What are the signs that my curly hair needs a protein treatment?

Signs that your curly hair may need a protein treatment include breakage, excessive shedding, a lack of elasticity, and a rough texture. If your hair feels weak or limp, it’s possible that a protein treatment could help restore its strength and resilience (source).

If you’ve been reading about curly hair care and now you’re wondering how to layer products on curly hair, then this post is for you!

It can get confusing with all the curly hair lingo and endless products you’re ‘supposed’ to use, so I’m sharing my basic framework on the order of curly hair products to help you keep it simple. This is a starting point that you can tweak as needed for your hair type and needs.

Order of Hair Products For Curly Hair

The basic order of hair products for all hair types is to go from lightest to heaviest, or from more moisturizing to the highest level of hold. This is true regardless of hair type, but wavy and curly hair usually require more moisture and hold than other types, so we end up using more products most of the time.

Here is the basic order to apply your hair products:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Conditioner
  3. Leave-in Conditioner/Cream
  4. Mousse/Foam/Serum
  5. Gel/Custard/Jelly

order of hair products - cleanser

Cleanser

The first product is your cleanser. This can be a cowash, low poo shampoo, or a clarifying shampoo. You only need one, but you can repeat this step if you feel the first time didn’t get your hair and scalp clean enough.

Wondering which cleanser is right for your hair? Make sure you take the Curly Hair Type Quiz to determine your needs.

Then check out these resources:

curly hair product order - conditioner

Conditioner

You can use a regular conditioner or deep conditioner for this step, but not both. Conditioning products soften the hair, help with detangling, add moisture for definition, and provide nutrients to the hair to help strengthen it.

Hair masks are also sometimes considered deep conditioners. Read the label to see how a product should be used so you can tell if it’s a conditioner or not.

Many deep conditioners target either moisture or repair. Be sure to follow the directions on the label so you don’t overdo it.

Once you know your hair type and its needs, use the resources below to help you find the right conditioners:

order of hair products for curly hair - cream

Leave-in Conditioner/Curl Cream

After your conditioner, you would apply a leave-in conditioner or curl cream. These products help lock in moisture and prepare your hair for styling.

A leave-in conditioner is lighter and works on all curl types, while a curl cream is heavier and best suited for curls that need extra moisture and definition.

If your hair is really, really dry then you can use both a leave-in conditioner and a curl cream.

Once you know your hair type and its needs, use the resources below to help you find the right leave-in products:

how to layer hair products on curly hair - serum

Mousse/Foam/Serum

The next products would be either a mousse, a foam, or a serum. These products help to define and enhance curls, and sometimes add volume. Curl activators are often serums and would be applied at this point, but some activators double as gel or cream.

All of these products are optional and you can totally skip using these altogether and just use a gel. You only need one but can use more if you want.

Once you know your hair type and its needs, use the resources below to help you find the right mousse, foam, or serum products:

order of products for wavy hair - gel

Gel/Custard/Jelly

These will provide hold and definition for a lasting style. Gels lock in the moisture you added with the previous products. Gels are key to having a style that lasts more than a day. And you can still have soft curls even when using gel – you just have to know how to use it the right way. Scrunch out the crunch is your friend here.

Again, you only need one but some people like to use more than one. If you struggle with definition and have really thick hair, go ahead and use a good amount or layer two gels if you want.

Once you know your hair type and its needs, use the resources below to help you find the right gel products:

Conclusion

If you’re new to embracing your curly hair, you’re likely feeling overwhelmed with all the products, methods, techniques, acronyms, and words (plopping, STC???).

It’s a lot of information to sort through and it’s easy to go down the rabbit hole and try all the things in an effort to succeed in your curly hair journey.

Some people are successful right away and for others, it takes a much longer time.

So what’s the secret to success on your curly hair journey?

Tracking what you’re doing from the beginning.

But first, if you want to start caring for your curly hair the right way, download my Quick Start Guide To Mastering Your Curls which outlines my simple 5-step system to get you started right now.

This guide simplifies the process for you and outlines exactly what you need to do, in an easy to follow format. It also includes a curly hair glossary and the ingredients you should avoid. Sign up below to get your FREE copy!

Why Track Your Curly Hair Journey?

  1. Understanding Your Curls:

When it comes to curly hair, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your curls are unique, and what works for one curly head may not work for another. Keeping a journal helps you understand your hair’s specific needs, responses, and patterns.

  1. Documenting Progress and Setbacks:

By tracking your curly hair journey, you get to see your progress in real time. It’s motivating to see how far you’ve come! Plus, if you ever experience a setback, your journal can help you identify what may have caused it.

  1. Identifying the Best Products and Techniques:

Your journal becomes a treasure trove of information about what products and techniques work best for your curls. You can experiment, track, and finally nail down that perfect routine.

How to Track Your Curly Hair Journey

Ensuring success and truly making progress with your curly hair is actually pretty simple. You just have to track what you are doing. That’s it!

You simply need to record pictures of your hair, the products and methods you’re using, and your schedule.

Without doing this, you risk overdoing moisture, creating buildup, not finding what methods and products truly work, and not actually learning about your hair.

The point of your curly hair journey is to have healthy, beautiful hair in its natural state. If you never learn about your hair how will that happen?

If all you’re doing is slapping different products you hear about and rotating through products and methods you see on YouTube without a real plan then what are you actually going to get out of that?

You might eventually get to the endpoint but how long will that take you? How much money and time will you waste? And all the frustration along the way…

I did not track my journey in my first year of embracing my curly hair and progress was slow.

I would try a product once or twice, then toss it aside.

I didn’t see the relationship between certain ingredients and humidity.

I over moisturized my hair because I wasn’t paying attention to how it felt and looked and had no idea what it needed.

All of that could have easily been avoided if I was tracking my journey.

Delilah’s wavy hair at the very beginning of her curly hair journey and her full curls after she tracked what products what she was using.

I saw much more improvement in my second year, which was when I started tracking what I was doing.

This ended up happening because I was blogging but it turned out to be a huge turning point in my curly hair journey.

I started having more consistent results, even when trying new products.

I figured out the techniques that really worked for me and stuck with those (unless I was testing a new method).

Seriously, keeping a record with photos and the details of the products and techniques was the best thing I did that year!

Start with the Basics

Make a note of your hair texture, density, porosity, and current hair health. These factors will guide your product choices and techniques.

Take photos and keep them organized

A picture is worth a thousand words! Snap some photos of your curls before and after styling. This will help you visually track your progress and see what’s working

There are a few ways to do this easily.

You can take photos and keep them in a folder/album on your phone, or create a private Instagram account to upload your photos with captions (this is my favorite option).

I like the private Instagram idea because you can list the products and methods used in the caption and it doesn’t take up space on your phone. It already has the date and you can see the visual by scrolling so it’s easy to see progress.

Track Your Daily Routine

Note down the products you use each day, the techniques you try, and the results. Be sure to include any changes in weather, as this can significantly impact your curls.

You can write a note in your calendar app, use the private Instagram account idea, or use any note-taking app to do this.

It’s super important to do this because you can see if there is a certain product linked to limp curls, frizz, or other problems you may be having. Without tracking you can’t pinpoint the specific problem as easily.

It’s also great to compare results as you test new products and methods. Sometimes it’s an ingredient and not necessarily the product so seeing that you had the same problem when using three products that have one particular ingredient in common is valuable.

Experiment and Note Your Observations

Try different products, techniques, and routines, and jot down how your curls respond. This will help you identify your hair’s likes and dislikes.

A side by side comparison of Delilah's limp curls versus full and bouncy hair achieved by tracking how different product work for her.

Create a schedule to ensure you maintain balance

I can’t tell you how many times I talk to people who have been struggling with their hair for a few weeks and when I ask them when was the last time they clarified or deep conditioned they can’t remember!

It’s so important to keep a schedule so that you maintain balance.

If you’re not regularly clarifying, deep conditioning, and doing other treatments that your hair needs you’ll eventually start to have problems like frizz, dryness, limp curls, tangles, and more.

Dealing with curly hair in humid weather can be quite challenging, but with the right techniques and products, you can keep your curls looking fabulous. Humidity often leads to frizz and unmanageable curls, but with some expert advice and styling tips, you can humidity-proof your hair and rock your natural curls with confidence.

First, it is essential to understand how humidity affects curly hair. Excess moisture in the air can cause your hair to absorb extra moisture, leading to swelling, frizz, and loss of definition in your curls. By using the right products and techniques, you can maintain the moisture balance in your hair, which is vital for well-defined, frizz-free curls.

Here are some proven strategies and tips to help you keep your curly hair looking its best, even in humid conditions. By incorporating these practices into your hair care routine, you can confidently embrace your natural curls, regardless of the weather.

How humidity affects curly hair

Humidity is how much water vapor is in the air. When the environment is humid, our hair tends to absorb moisture from the air which in turn causes swelling and frizz.

In the summer, the dew point is high meaning that the air can hold a lot more water than any other time of year. So this is why the humidity is such a problem in the summer and your hair struggles.

When the humidity levels in the air increase, the moisture from the atmosphere interacts with your hair’s natural texture. This moisture causes the proteins in your hair to form more hydrogen bonds, leading to a change in the shape of your hair strands. As a result, your curly hair may become even curlier or take on a frizzy appearance in humid conditions.

In humid weather, the water molecules in the air can penetrate your hair shaft and disrupt the balance of proteins inside. This disruption weakens the hair structure, causing it to become more prone to breakage and split ends. Your hair’s natural texture can also be affected by this moisture, making it harder to manage.

Humidity-Proofing Your Curly Hair

There are a number of styling products and techniques that can help humidity-proof your curly hair.

Reduce Humectants

Humectants like glycerin may increase frizz during humid months as they pull moisture from the air into your hair. Limit your use of humectant-containing products or switch to ones low in humectants to keep frizz at bay.

There are two type of humectants: common and film-forming. Film-forming humectants form a flexible barrier on the hair and are much safer to use in humidity.

Common humectants include:

  • glycerin
  • sodium PCA
  • honey
  • sodium lactate
list of humectants

Use lightweight Moisture

Because there is so much moisture in the air, you won’t need as much in your hair, but you do need some. Even without using humectants your hair will still absorb some of the moisture in the air around it. It’s very easy for hair to get over moisturized in high humidity and dew points.

So you can try skipping the leave-in or using a lot less and see what happens. This works really well for me.

But remember that conditioner seals the hair, so you want to ensure your hair is conditioned enough and not dry.

showing layering styling products for curly hair in humidity

Use hard hold styling products

Hard hold styling gels will help your curls keep their shape and block out some absorption of the moisture from the air. Just remember to keep it light handed, especially if your hair is fine or thin.

Use emollients/anti-humectants

Anti-humectants are the opposite of humectants. Instead of attracting moisture, they seal the hair to block absorption. They include emollients, which are hydrophobic (don’t like water).

You can try sealing in your style with emollients by scrunching in a few drops of your favorite oil into your hair after styling. I recommend light oils like jojoba and argan oil. My favorite is The Innate Life Rose Hair Elixir.

Some other popular anti-humectants are:

  • butters like shea and mango
  • oils like coconut and olive
  • beeswax, which is not CG approved

These can be heavy though so be careful. And they can build up since they are not water soluble.

showing an oil as emollients for curly hair in humidity

Use humidity resistant ingredients

Anti-humidity ingredients are great to block out humidity and provide hold, but they do cause build up. However, they are the most effective at preventing frizz from humidity. I recommend if you use products with these ingredients that you clarify regularly.

Here are some common humidity resistant ingredients:

  • polyquats (ployquaternium-4 and others)
  • PVA/VP copolymer
  • Polyacrylate acid
  • other polymers
humidty resistant styling products for curly hair

Layer Styling Products or Try Smasters technique

Layering products can help ensure your hair holds up. I recommend no more than 2 to avoid heaviness and buildup.

If you’re not sure what Smasters is, it’s when you add a small amount of styling product to your hair once it is mostly or fully dry to help seal in the style and get a good cast.

When I do this, I stop diffusing when my hair is mostly dry then glaze and scrunch in some hard hold gel (a small amount) and continue drying.

Include Proteins

Proteins play a vital role in strengthening and maintaining your hair’s structure. Ensure your hair is receiving enough protein through regular deep conditioning treatments or protein-rich leave-in conditioners.

Brush Style

Brush styling leads to extra definition and hold and is one of the best ways to prevent frizz.

The Flip Section Method in the video below is an easy way to brush tyle without spending an hour styling your hair.

Diffuse Dry

Diffusing your hair, even if just for a few minutes, helps lock in your style and activate the styling products so that your hair is less likely to be ruined by external factors.

Just be sure to avoid high heat and don’t diffuse for too long. Once your hair is mostly dry, that’s when you should stop.

Leave your hair in the cast

If all else fails, try just leaving your hair in the cast as long as possible, or don’t scrunch it out 100%.

The cast is the most protective thing for our curls since it basically encloses our hair in a protective layer which forms a barrier to the outside.

Choose the Right Products For Humidity

It’s important to know how to determine if a product will work well in humidity.

The first step is to look at the ingredients list. Let’s have a look at 2 popular gels: Giovanni LA Hold and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

Check the top 5 ingredients to scan for humidity-resistant ingredients, humectants, and anti-humectants. A product that works well in humidity should have at least one humidity-resistant ingredient in the top 5. If it has humectants without anti-humectants or humidity resistant ingredients in the top 5, then it probably won’t work well in humidity.

Below is the Giovanni LA Hold Gel. The first 5 ingredients contain an anti-humidity ingredient. Then further down the ingredients list, you can see one emollient. So this is great for my hair because it isn’t full of a bunch of butters and oils, it has an anti-humidity ingredient close to the top, and it’s hard hold. I can see why this is so popular!

glycerin-free-products-humidity-curly-hair

Below is the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. You can see it has glycerin as the 6th ingredient. It also has a lot of emollients, including in the top 5. So this could possibly work for someone who can handle heavy products, but it doesn’t have any anti-humidity ingredients so this one is a toss-up. If it didn’t have glycerin then it would be ok.

A very popular gel for humidity is the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Stronger Hold Gel, which happens to have glycerin. However, if you scan the ingredients list, you’ll see lots of hard hold and humidity-resistant ingredients, which negates the negative effects of glycerin.

Living in Florida, this gel works really well for me and many that I have recommended it to. So you don’t always need to avoid glycerin, you really just need humidity-resistant ingredients and hard hold.

TWIST Weather Up Gel is another one of my favorites because it has humidity-resistant and hold ingredients so it’s great for humid places.

Troubleshooting Common Humidity Hair Problems

Finding the Right Balance

The key to addressing humidity-related hair problems is finding the right balance of moisture in your hair care routine.

Start by using a sulfate-free shampoo to gently cleanse without stripping away natural oils.

Follow up with a conditioner that has a mix of protein and moisturizing ingredients.

Experiment with leave-in conditioners and different stylers to see which ones work best for your specific hair type.

Some styling products, such as custards, will offer more moisture than others, like mousses. Some hair types can skip leave-in altogether and just use a mousse or gel to style.

Addressing Dry and Damaged Hair

Dry and damaged hair is more susceptible to frizz in humid conditions. If your hair is already dry, try incorporating a deep conditioning treatment at least once per week to help restore moisture and strength. Also, consider using a leave-in conditioner to provide extra hydration and protection against environmental damage.

For damaged hair, look for products specifically designed to repair and strengthen strands, such as protein-rich hair masks or treatments containing natural oils like coconut or argan oil.

Controlling Flyaways and Unruly Curls

Managing flyaways and unruly curls in humidity can be a challenge. The best solution is to apply a styling gel to help hold your curls in place and reduce frizz and use a brush to distribute the product and smooth out each clump. Check out this video where I show you exactly how to do this quickly and easily.

To keep curls defined during the day, try refreshing them with a water, leave-in conditioner, and gel mix in a spray bottle. Avoid touching your hair too much, as this can lead to more frizz and breakage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best anti-humidity products for curly hair?

There are numerous anti-humidity products available for curly hair. Check out this post on the best anti-humidity products for curly hair.

Which hair oils work best in high humidity?

In high humidity, lightweight hair oils are recommended as they can help control frizz without weighing your hair down. Examples of such oils include argan oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil. These oils can be applied sparingly to damp or dry hair, focusing on your ends or problem areas. Remember, a little goes a long way, so start with a small amount and add more if needed.

How can I protect curly hair from humidity naturally?

One way to protect curly hair from humidity naturally is by regularly deep conditioning. This helps to keep your hair moisturized and less prone to frizz.

Additionally, using proper hair care techniques like finger-detangling, washing with sulfate-free shampoos, and drying your hair using a microfiber towel or a t-shirt can help reduce frizz.

Is fine curly hair more affected by humidity?

Fine curly hair is often more susceptible to humidity due to its thinner structure. It can be more prone to frizz and lack of definition in humid conditions.

However, this doesn’t mean that individuals with fine curls can’t enjoy bouncy, defined curls in high humidity. Using lightweight hair products with humidity-resistant ingredients and a hard hold can help improve the appearance of fine curls in humid weather.

Can humidity lead to damage in curly hair?

Humidity can lead to frizz and cause your curls to lose definition. While occasional frizziness may not necessarily result in damage, continuous exposure to humidity without proper hair care can cause curly hair to become more prone to breakage and damage. Implementing adequate moisturizing and styling techniques, along with using anti-humidity products, can help protect your curls from potential damage in humid conditions.

Conclusion

During humid weather, your curly hair might become more unmanageable and frizzy. This is because the increase in humidity affects the protein structure of your hair, causing it to absorb more moisture from the air. The excess moisture leads to hair strands swelling, which disrupts the cuticle and results in frizz. Understanding the science behind hair structure can help you find ways to maintain your curls in humid conditions.

To protect your hair from humidity, it’s important to keep your hair moisturized and use products with humidity-resistant ingredients. This will help create a barrier against the extra moisture in the air. You can also use anti-humectant and hard hold products designed for curly hair, which may reduce frizz and improve manageability.

Additionally, understanding the relationship between dew point, humectants, and humidity for curly hair can help you select products with the right ingredients for your hair type. Humectants, which help attract moisture to your hair, can be helpful in low-humidity environments but may cause increased frizz in high-humidity settings. Thus, picking the right hair products and adjusting your hair care routine accordingly will make it easier for you to manage your curls in any weather.

Glycerin is a common ingredient in many hair products, but for some people, it can wreak havoc on their curls. Because of this, people may opt for glycerin free hair products to help combat the high humidity.

If you’ve read my post on humidity, dew point, and weather styling then you understand why you’re having frizz and struggling with hold. But in case you didn’t read that post, although I strongly encourage you do, I’ll give you a quick little recap.

Glycerin, along with other humectants, is usually what’s causing problems in humid weather. So this is a great time to use styling products that don’t have a high concentration of glycerin or other humectants. It is also great to use anti-humidity ingredients and emollients.

Keep reading to find out my top picks for glycerin free products to style your curls in high humidity.

Why Choose Glycerin Free Products for Curly Hair

When it comes to managing your curly hair, you might be surprised to learn that glycerin free products can be a game-changer for some. Glycerin, a common ingredient in many hair products, is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture. While this can be beneficial for some hair types, it may not suit everyone, especially those living in certain environments or dealing with specific hair concerns.

For those of you living in high humidity or low humidity regions, you may find that glycerin can do more harm than good. In high humidity conditions or on days with high dew points, glycerin can cause your hair to absorb too much moisture from the air, leading to frizz and loss of definition. On the other hand, during the winter months or in dry environments, glycerin might struggle to find enough moisture to retain, leaving your curls parched and prone to breakage.

Understanding Humectants and Their Role in Hair Products

Humectants are substances that play a significant role in hair care products. They work by attracting and retaining moisture from the environment, providing much-needed hydration to your hair. When used correctly, humectants can improve your hair’s softness, elasticity, and overall appearance.

A common humectant found in hair products is glycerin. It can effectively absorb moisture from the air and deliver it to your hair shaft, helping it swell and maintain its shape. However, the effectiveness of glycerin depends on the surrounding humidity and dew points. In areas with high humidity, glycerin might cause your hair to become frizzy and unmanageable. On the other hand, when used in low humidity environments, it can make your hair feel dry and brittle.

To ensure that your hair gets the moisture it needs without the unwanted side effects, it’s essential to understand how humidity and dew points affect the performance of humectants. In simple terms, humidity measures the amount of moisture in the air, while dew points indicate the temperature at which the air reaches saturation and produces condensation.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how different levels of humidity and dew points interact with humectants:

  • Low humidity and low dew points: In this scenario, humectants like glycerin might draw moisture out of your hair instead of adding it, leading to dryness.
  • High humidity and low dew points: If the humidity is high, but the dew points are low, humectants can effectively lock in moisture without causing frizz.
  • High humidity and high dew points: This is when humectants might make your hair frizzy and unmanageable due to excess moisture absorption.

Knowing your area’s humidity levels and dew points can help you make informed decisions about the best hair products to use. If you find that glycerin isn’t working for you, consider trying glycerin-free hair products designed for curly hair. These alternatives may provide the desired moisture without causing frizz or dryness, allowing you to enjoy beautiful, well-hydrated curls.

What is glycerin?

Glycerin is a sugar alcohol and is one of the most popular types of humectants.

It’s so good at encouraging curl and adding moisture, and usually isn’t a problem. But in humid conditions, it might be best to avoid styling products with glycerin and other humectants.

Do you need to totally avoid glycerin?

No. Although some people do better off without glycerin altogether, that’s because it’s an ingredient that isn’t compatible with their hair, whether it’s in shampoo or gel, and regardless of the season or weather conditions. For most people, that isn’t the case and won’t need to have a completely glycerin free routine.

My recommendation is that you focus on the first 5 ingredients in the products you don’t rinse off your hair. So don’t worry about glycerin in your cleanser or conditioner. But do pay attention to it in your leave-in conditioner and styling products. You want products that have lower concentrations of glycerin and other humectants, which means they’ll appear near the bottom half of the ingredients list.

Other Humectants To Look Out For

Remember that glycerin is one of many humectants. Some other popular ones include:

  • honey
  • agave nectar
  • propylene glycols
  • algae extract
  • butylene glycol
  • panthenol
  • sodium PCA

So again, look at the first 5 ingredients and see if there are any humectants. If you see one or more of these, I’d set that product aside until the humidity goes back down, or layer a hard hold anti-humectant product over it.

Download my free Humidity Styling Guide below to help you choose the right products and style correctly in the humidity. In this guide I list all humectants, emollients, and humidity resistant ingredients; recommended products with links; and include a text version of this blog post so you always have the info available to you wherever you are.

Conclusion

When it comes to maintaining your curly hair, glycerin free products (or simply low humectant products) may be a game-changer, especially in humid conditions. Too much moisture absorbed from the air can cause your curls to swell and frizz, making your hair harder to manage. By choosing glycerin free hair products, you can prevent this issue and better enjoy your curls in any weather.

Remember to pay attention to the labels and ingredients list when shopping for hair products. Ditching glycerin is not the only step you can take to keep your curls looking fabulous. Other humectants, like honey and propylene glycol, can also impact how your hair reacts to humidity. Be mindful of these ingredients when selecting products for your specific hair needs.

In conclusion, adapting your hair care routine to include glycerin free products can help you better manage and maintain your curly hair, regardless of the weather. Combine this with other humidity-proofing tips and tricks to fully embrace your curls and their natural beauty.

Summer seems to be everyone’s favorite season, but for those of us with curly hair, it can bring some confusion and difficulties. As the warm weather sets in, seasonal challenges like humidity and heat can affect the overall health of your curls. Because of this, you might have to make some changes to your curly hair routine for the summer.

In this article, you’ll discover some wonderful summer curly hair care tips, from protecting your locks against the sun to mastering a foolproof styling method. These curly hair tips for summer will help you have gorgeous and healthy curls all summer long!

Beat the Humidity

How many times have you styled your hair, walked outside in the humidity, and within minute it just fluffs and falls out?

The reason your hair frizzes in the humidity has to do with hold and humectants. Humectants are ingredients that attract moisture, and when the air is humid there is a lot more moisture that humectants end up attracting to your hair.

Many people avoid humectants in their styling product during the summer to deal with this. It’s an easy fix that won’t involve a bunch of experimenting. But I suggest you avoid humectants if they are in the top 5 ingredients AND there aren’t any humidity-resistant and anti-humectant ingredients.

Sealants and humidity-resistant ingredients can help smooth and protect your curls in the summer heat. Look for products containing ingredients like polyquats, oils, butters, or silicones that create a barrier between your hair and the environment, locking in moisture and preventing frizz. Just be careful if your hair requires lighter products.

Adding a finishing hairspray with humidity blocking ingredients is an excellent way to protect against the effects of humidity.

Reduce the Moisture in Your Routine (if the humidity is high)

If you live in a high-humidity area, it’s essential to balance the moisture in your hair. Overly moisturized hair can become frizzy and unmanageable.

Consider using lightweight hydrating products like a leave-in conditioner instead of a cream to keep your curls hydrated without weighing them down.

Use Sun Protection

Your curly hair needs protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Make sure to use SPF on your hair just like you do for your skin. This helps prevent damage to both the inside and outside of your hair strands. There are even products made to protect your scalp in the sun, something which most of us forget about as we slather SPF cream on our face and body.

You could also use a hat or scarf to cover your hair and protect it against the sun’s rays.

Protect Your Hair When Swimming

Before taking a dip in the pool or ocean, make sure you protect your curls from chlorine and saltwater. Wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner or hair mask to keep your hair hydrated.

Braiding or putting hair up in a bun is a great option to prevent tangles while swimming. I do this to my daughter’s hair after wetting it and applying some leave-in.

Additionally, you can cover your hair with a swim cap or scarf to keep it safe from chemicals and harsh elements while swimming.

Ensure Your Routine Has Protein

If you’re spending time outdoors or swimming, it’s really important to include protein in your routine.

Protein is essential to maintaining healthy curls, so include protein-rich products in your summer hair care routine. Protein strengthens the hair, reduces frizz, and helps keep hair hydrated.

Look for conditioners, leave-ins, and hair masks containing hydrolyzed proteins, which can help strengthen and protect your curls.

Increase The Hold In Your Styling Products

In hot and humid summer months, your curls may need extra hold to maintain their shape. Opt for styling products with stronger hold, such as gels, sprays, or mousses, to help your curls stay put in high humidity.

Hard hold ingredients include a variety of polymers: PVP/VA, polyacrylates, some polyquats, and polyamide. Look for products that contain a combination of a few of these closer to the top of the ingredients list.

Clarify & Deep Condition Regularly

Not that this is specific to summer, since you should be clarifying on a regular basis anyway.

But summer activities can expose your curls to sweat, chlorine, and saltwater, which may cause buildup and damage. Regularly clarify your hair to remove these impurities and follow up with a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask to restore hydration and health to your curls.

If you’re a regular reader, you know I am always looking for more ways to add volume to my fine curly hair. Having thin curly hair makes it difficult to get those luscious big curly hairstyles many with wavy and curly hair have.

But it is possible to have volume even if you have fine or thin curly hair. You simply need the right products and the right styling methods. And if you don’t have thin hair but still want more volume in your curls, these tips will help you too! In this post, I’m sharing the best tips, tricks, and products to volumize curly hair.

How To Get Volume In Curly Hair

The basic idea to volumize curly hair is that you need to use volumizing products and style in a way that creates volume.

Be sure to check out my post on tips for thin curly hair if you have fine or low density curls. Those tips will help you ensure you’re doing the right things to encourage volume in thin or fine curly hair.

Delilah Orpi's volume and her curly hair

Use Strong Shampoos & Clarify Regularly

Shampoos with multiple surfactants that cleanse the hair more thoroughly result in increased volume. It removes the most buildup and oil so that your hair will have more bounce.

Use Lightweight Products

Lightweight products are products that have fewer ingredients that buildup or weigh down the hair. These tends to be watery, thin products like serums, foams, mousses, and gels.

Reduce The Moisture

The more moisture you have the less volume you’ll have. That’s why you’ll find “drying” ingredients like alcohol in most volumizing products.

To get more volume, cut down on the amount of leave in, creams, and hydrating treatments you do.

Use Volumizing Products

Of course, you have to start with some good volumizing products. I used to try different volumizing products all the time when I wore my hair straight but since going curly it’s been difficult to get more volume as moisture tends to weigh down my hair and curly products are all moisturizing.

Volumizing products tend to be on the lower end of moisturizing. My hair likes a lot less moisture than most curly and wavy types so I can go all out with my products and reduce moisture as much as possible. But for many others you’ll have to modify and put together what works for you and is balanced for your hair.

Use Volumizing Methods

The last thing you need to do is style in a way that adds volume. Simple changes like pulling the hair up and away from the scalp instead of down can make a huge difference. Other methods include styling upside down, scrunching at the root, styling on damp hair, and diffusing.

These are some of the best products for adding volume to curly hair.

Malibu C Undo Goo Clarifying Shampoo

This is one of the best clarifying shampoos out there. It’s ideal to use a clarifying shampoo on a monthly basis to make sure your roots and hair are as clean as possible for maximum volume potential.

Top Pick
Malibu C Un-Do-Goo Clarifying Shampoo
$17.00 ($1.89 / Fl Oz)

This is my top pick for clarifying all hair types. It removes buildup the best and is still gentle on curly hair.

EVOLVh InstaVolume

InstaVolume is EVOLVh’s newest line and gives me more volume than any other line I have tried. It’s a shampoo and leave in conditioner duo. The shampoo is very lightweight and a stronger cleanser on the low poo spectrum. If your hair likes moisture, this will not provide enough for you. But it’s perfect for my hair. It leaves it super clean and light without drying it out.

EVOLVh InstaVolume Cleansing Treatment
$29.00 ($3.41 / Fl Oz)

This is my go to shampoo for ultimate volume.

Then you go straight into the leave-in. There is no conditioner in this line which makes sense since you need to sacrifice moisture to get more volume. So again, if your hair likes moisture this will not be enough.

EVOLVh InstaVolume Elixir Leave-In
$30.00 ($3.53 / Fl Oz)

Kerotin Volumizing Duo

I LOVE this root spray. It’s the best root spray I have used and really adds lots of root volume. The volumizing mousse is really good too, so this is a combo I reach for often. They’ll give your hair a little texture and hold, and add lots of volume.

Top Pick
Kerotin Hair Volumizing Mousse & Root Volumizer

A volumizing duo designed to boost volume for fine, thin hair and increase the thickness from the inside over time.

EVOLVh InstaVolume Mousse

Another foam option is this volumizing mousse. It leaves hair a little softer than the Kerotin but adds lots of volume and fullness without making your hair feel dirty.

$29.00 ($3.41 / Fl Oz)

My favorite volumizing foam.

TreLuxe ReFlex Serum

ReFlex Serum is an extremely lightweight product that provides flexible hold along with definition and shine. It really helps my curls look smooth and shiny and gives amazing slip while styling. This is an optional product you can use if you want extra definition as this doesn’t add volume or hold.

TRELUXE Reflex Curl Styling Serum
$19.50

Make refreshing a breeze with this serum that can be used alone to smooth out frizz and revive curls. I also use it as a single styler on wash day with great results. Great for all hair types. Use code HOLISTICENCHILADA to save 15%.

EVOLVh Total Control Styling Creme

After testing out a ton of different products and combinations, including the Total Control Styling Creme product always gives me the most volume. It’s not a curl cream though so it isn’t moisturizing. It’s like a creamy gel with medium hold and is lightweight. It gives my hair some texture which really helps with volume, along with definition and hold so my style lasts.

Top Pick
EVOLVh TotalControl Styling Crème
$34.00 ($4.00 / Fl Oz)

I struggle with creams but this is a styling cream that doesn't offer much moisture. It provides light to medium hold, light texture, and volume. I can use this as a single styler and skip gel.

Styling Methods For Volume

I use something I call the Rake Shake Scrunch method, which is exactly what it sounds like. After glazing the product over my hair, I rake through to distribute and reduce frizz. I shake my hair to encourage the clumps to naturally form. Then I scrunch to seal in the clumps and ensure the product is all over my hair.

Clip The Roots

You can try placing clips in your roots as your hair dries to encourage more root volume. Duckbill clips and claw clips are popular options for this technique. Some people place the clips in after they have diffused to set the volume.

Style Upside Down or Pull Hair Up As You Style

The hair should be pulled up and away from the scalp to encourage more volume. If you just pull the hair down, it won’t have as much volume.

Styling upside down makes this easy, but you could easily just pull the hair up as you style.

Scrunch At The Roots

When you scrunch your product in, don’t forget to scrunch up to the root area. You don’t want to apply product directly to the root area (unless it’s a volumizing foam or spray), but you want to get some product up there. Scrunching up to the root help with this and it encourages more root lift.

Diffuse Upside Down

Again, having the hair away from the scalp will encourage volume. You can diffuse upside down or tilt your head to each side as you diffuse.

Also, diffusing yields more volume than air drying to try to diffuse for at least a few minutes.

Go For Smaller Clumps

Don’t create thick curl clumps as that will make your hair look thinner. Instead, style with smaller, skinnier clumps.

If you struggle with frizz, a good method is to brush the hair to smooth it down, then use a comb to split it into smaller clumps.

Try Styling On Damp Hair

If your hair likes it, you can try styling on damp hair instead of wet hair. This doesn’t work as well for me but it does work for many.

The less wet your hair is, the more volume you can get, but it can also lead to a little more frizz.

Volumizing Curly Hair Routine

Here is a breakdown of my routine for volume:

  1. Shampoo with EVOLVh InstaVolume. I leave it in for a few minutes while I soap up. Rinse it out completely.
  2. Spray the EVOLVh InstaVolume elixir liberally all over my hair. I try not to get much near the roots and focus more on the ends. I flip my hair and spray the underside as well. I let it sit a bit then squish in a little bit of water. Then I finger detangle with my head upside down.
  3. Spray in root spray for root lift.
  4. Scrunch in one pump of volumizing mousse.
  5. Rake in a pea sized amount of serum for definition. Shake and scrunch a little.
  6. Rake in a nickel sized amount of EVOLVh Total Control Styling Creme. Shake and scrunch all over, flipping my head to the sides to ensure the curls fall naturally and avoid wonky sections. Scrunch in a pea sized amount of the styling creme to set the ends.
  7. Microplop with my hair towel.
  8. Wait a few minutes then pixie diffuse.

You can watch my full styling routine below.

And for the next day, I love using a hair spray along with some dry shampoo to add back in some volume. I use it if I’ll be spending some time outside to help hold my style and whenever I decide to refresh my hair a bit.

Have you ever wondered why you have waxy hair, even though you’ve only just washed and styled it? You might even have tried washing your hair multiple times, but it still feels heavy and greasy after just a few hours, leaving you asking yourself ‘Why does my hair feel waxy?’

We know it’s frustrating when this happens, but you aren’t alone!

Waxy hair is a common problem that can easily stop you from looking and feeling your best. But luckily, it’s usually straightforward to resolve once you know what’s causing the waxy texture.

So this guide will help you pinpoint the factors making your hair waxy and help you find the best solutions to your problem. You’ll also find some product recommendations that will soon make your locks look fabulous again!

Why does my hair feel waxy? – Possible Causes

Before you can deal with waxy hair, you need to know what is causing it. There are several potential causes, and you may even find there’s more than one cause for your waxy feeling hair.

Each cause has its own remedy, so it’s essential to find out precisely what’s making your hair feel waxy. Here are some of the most common causes:

Hair Feels Waxy From Product Buildup

Product buildup is one of the most common causes of waxy hair, especially because some products literally contain wax!

If your hair feels like it has a film on it, even after you’ve just washed it, you may have product buildup. You may also notice the waxy buildup makes your locks feel sticky after drying.

If you find yourself asking, “Why does my hair feel waxy after washing?”, this is most likely the cause.

There are a few different reasons why product residue can cause waxy hair, so here are some tips for dealing with them:

Excess Silicone

If product buildup is making your hair feel waxy, silicones could be the primary cause of your problems. Silicones help to fight frizz and make your mane feel soft, but they coat the hair shaft with a film that builds up over time and is hard to wash out.

Many hair products contain silicones, including styling products, hair masks, and even your conditioner, which makes it hard to avoid silicones altogether. A weekly clarifying shampoo will help remove any buildup and reset your hair.

before and after waxy hair
In this photo, my hair was weighed down and waxy from heavy product buildup.

Heavy Conditioners and Moisturizing Products

Choosing heavy conditioners and oils can contribute to your hair feeling waxy. It’s essential to know your hair type, choose the right conditioner, and ensure you don’t use too much conditioner.

Unless you have damaged or textured hair, you can generally use a lightweight conditioner and then layer on additional moisture from a leave-in conditioner or oil as needed. If you have fine hair, it’s best to choose a lightweight oil, and you’ll find an excellent recommendation further down this guide.

This type of buildup was my problem in the past, and it took me way too long to figure it out.

Too many products

Waxy feeling hair can sometimes be caused by using too much of a product, allowing it to build up on your locks. So when you try a new product, it’s best to use a small amount first and then see whether you need to add more later.

Not Following the Instructions

If you don’t follow the manufacturer’s instructions, applying products incorrectly or using too much is very easy. For example, many people apply conditioner incorrectly or apply too much, which can cause grease to build up and make your locks fall flat.

So reading your product labels and following the instructions is essential.

Chemical Treatments

Harsh chemicals like colors and perms can make your hair dry, brittle, and waxy. That’s because the structure of the keratin in the hair shaft is broken down by repeated color treatments or perms, making your hair feel sticky.

If this is why your hair feels waxy, you may need to take a break from chemical treatments to give your hair a chance to recover.

Sticky Hair From Hard Water

Many American homes have hard water, which means it contains high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium. If you get a mineral build up on your hair, it can feel sticky or waxy.

You’ll know you have hard water if you see a white buildup on your faucet or white spots on your glasses when they come out of the dishwasher.

As well as using a chelating shampoo to remove the mineral deposits from your hair, installing a shower head filter is an inexpensive way to reduce the mineral levels in the water. There’s a great recommendation further down in this guide.

Not Washing Hair Often Enough or Too Often

Washing your hair regularly is essential to prevent waxy feeling hair. It helps remove any excessive oil or product buildup from your scalp and hair, so if you don’t wash your hair often enough, it may feel waxy after washing.

But it’s also important not to wash your hair too often or use very hot water, as that can make your scalp get dry. When this happens, the sebaceous glands produce more natural oils to compensate for the dryness. That causes scalp buildup which results in, you guessed it, greasy hair.

And more frequent hair washes or using harsh shampoos to try and reduce the excessive oil will only make your oily hair problem worse.

So pick the frequency that suits you, which could be every other day or twice weekly. And be sure to rinse your hair properly to ensure the shampoo and conditioner don’t build up.

conditioner buildup on hair making it feel waxy

Unhealthy Diet

A healthy diet is vital for good hair health. Junk food and fatty foods contain saturated and trans-fats which can cause inflamed and oily skin, and increase the production of your scalp’s natural oils.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet and drinking enough water will help your body to regulate sebum production.

Health Issues

Medical conditions that can cause a waxy buildup include:

  • Fungal or bacterial infections
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis

Some medications like steroids and birth control pills can cause your sebaceous glands to increase sebum production. And high levels of stress cause your body to increase production of the stress hormone cortisol, making your scalp produce more of its natural oils.

If you’ve ruled out every other possible cause, your general practitioner, a dermatologist, or a trichologist may be able to find and treat the cause of your excessive oil production.

Products to Combat Waxy Feeling Hair

Once you know why your hair feels waxy, you can start to deal with the problem. Remember that it’s essential to choose products that suit your hair type as well as its density and porosity.

In the Shower

Healthy hair starts in the shower, so keep these products close at hand to clean and protect your locks.

Shower Head Filter

If hard water is the cause of your hair’s waxy buildup, installing a shower head filter can help to remove minerals like calcium from the water. This stops them settling on your tresses and, over time, they should look and feel better.

Why does my hair feel waxy? FAQs

Here are some of your most common questions about waxy hair:

How Do You Fix Waxy Hair Fast?

There are a few easy steps you can take to fix this problem:

  • Wash your hair as often as it needs, no more or less
  • Use a clarifying shampoo weekly to remove the buildup of sebum or product
  • Clean your brushes, hair tools, and hair accessories frequently
  • Apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding the roots
  • Clean your hats, pillowcases, and towels frequently and thoroughly
  • Check your haircare products for silicone and find alternatives if possible

Do All Hair Types Experience Waxy Hair?

Anyone can experience waxy hair, but hair type is one factor contributing to waxy-feeling hair.

If you have straight hair like Type 1B, the natural oils can travel more easily down the whole hair strand from root to tip. If too much oil builds up, it can leave your hair feeling waxy. It’s more difficult for the natural oil to reach the lower parts of wavy and curly hair types, so the problem is more likely to be confined to your roots.

Why Is There Silicone in Hair Products?

Silicones put a shiny coating on your hair’s cuticles, making it look softer and shinier. They can also make your hair more manageable and easier to style and they smooth your hair texture. This can be helpful if you have high-porosity hair, as it will reduce frizz.

Unfortunately, silicones can also build up on your locks, making your hair feel waxy after washing and causing a lack of volume.

Do Natural Hair Products Work?

DIY treatments for waxy buildup can be an affordable way to get rid of waxy hair. However, they can be quite drying, so it’s best to be cautious and avoid these if you have dry hair and skin.

You could try mixing two parts baking soda with one part water and spreading the mix thickly over your hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly, then shampoo and condition your hair as usual.

Alternatively, you could try the apple cider vinegar rinse mentioned earlier in this guide.

Can Sulfates Be Good for Your Hair?

Sulfates help remove dirt and oil from greasy hair and are generally safe to use. However, they can strip away moisture from your hair, leaving your hair and scalp dry and possibly irritated.

Why Does My Hair Feel Waxy – The Bottom Line

Spending time washing and styling your hair just to have it look limp and greasy is frustrating. But after reading this guide, you now know the factors that can make your hair feel waxy and the solutions to this common hair problem.

So with a little effort and some simple hair care products, you can get rid of waxy hair and soon have beautiful, healthy-feeling hair again!

Everyone knows that healthy hair needs plenty of moisture. But if your hair absorbs too much moisture, it could lead to hygral fatigue.

You may not have heard of hygral fatigue before. It’s a condition that can lead to your curly hair losing elasticity, looking limp and lifeless, and eventually breaking.

The causes of hygral fatigue vary, but the good news is it can easily be resolved if you catch it in the early stages. This means it’s essential to know the signs of hygral fatigue so you can act quickly when you see them.

This guide will tell you everything you need to know about hygral fatigue, including what causes it, the signs of hygral fatigue and how to fix hygral fatigue.

Hygral Fatigue: What Is It?

When excess moisture repeatedly enters and exits your hair cuticles, it can cause the hair strands to swell and shrink. But your hair isn’t designed to change size repeatedly like this.

If your hair doesn’t have a strong protein structure, the repeated swelling and shrinking will damage your cuticles, which is called hygral fatigue. Like an elastic band being stretched repeatedly, it leads to your damaged hair losing elasticity and eventually breaking.

Hygral fatigue is often associated with hair porosity, but everyone’s hair is unique. Learning the causes and symptoms of hygral fatigue will help you recognize it in your own hair.

Recognizing Symptoms of Hygral Fatigue

There are several stages of hygral fatigue, and spotting the symptoms as soon as possible is vital to avoid the worst hair damage. Here are some of the key signs of hygral fatigue:

Poorly Defined Curls or Frizziness

Curly hair with hygral fatigue struggles to maintain its curl structure and the curls become poorly defined. The hair will feel light, and there may be excess frizz, tangles, and knots.

Dull and Limp Hair

Hair that is experiencing hygral fatigue will feel limp and brittle, and look dull and lifeless.

Gummy Texture when Wet

Without the proper protein structure to support it, your hair will have a gummy feeling when it’s saturated with water.

Low Elasticity

Hair with hygral fatigue may have low elasticity. This means it’s difficult to stretch when wet or doesn’t spring back when you’ve stretched it out.

You can test this by performing the wet stretch test. If you gently stretch a strand of wet hair, it should return to its original length easily and without breaking.

If it doesn’t stretch much, you probably need to add moisture to your hair, but if your hair stretches too far and then breaks, it probably needs more protein.

Breakage

Severe hygral fatigue may lead to breakage as the weakened protein structure of your hair struggles to support the weight of water absorbed into the strands.  Remember that other factors like rough shampooing or excessive tangles could also cause hair breakage.

Causes of Hygral Fatigue Hair

There are several potential causes of hygral fatigue, and some or all of these might affect your hair. Here are some factors that may cause hygral fatigue:

Over Moisturized or Over Hydrated Hair

Overusing moisturizing products can leave hair at risk of hygral fatigue, particularly in high porosity hair. Using a deep conditioner or hair mask too often or letting deep conditioner sit on your hair for too long can also be a risk factor. Leaving your hair soaking wet for too long after your shower or constantly wetting hair before it has dried completely will also risk hygral fatigue.

Loss of Necessary Oils in Hair

Hair naturally repels water thanks to an oily substance called 18-MEA (18-metil eicosanoic acid) which coats the cuticle surface of your hair strands.

This protective substance can be stripped from your hair by frequent shampooing or using chemical processes like dyes or perms regularly. Without the 18-MEA layer, the cuticles can open up, allowing more moisture to enter the hair shafts.

Damage to Hair

Chemical treatments, environmental factors, heated styling tools, or harsh grooming can damage the protective cuticle cells on your hair strands, making your hair more porous.

Imbalanced pH Levels

The pH level of your hair measures how acidic or alkaline it is. On a scale from 1 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline), healthy hair tends to be around pH 5.5.

Using alkaline products on your hair can remove the protective 18-MEA layer and cause friction between hair fibers, damaging the hair’s cuticle layer.

Genetic Causes

If you have low hair porosity, the hair cuticle cells are tightly packed together, which makes it more difficult for water to be absorbed. If you have high porosity hair, it’s easier for water to enter the hair because the cuticle cells are spaced further apart.

So if you know that you have high hair porosity, it’s even more important to try and avoid hygral fatigue.

How to Prevent Hygral Fatigue

Prevention is better than cure, so preventing hygral fatigue is the best option for healthy hair. Here are a few simple steps you can take:

Brushing

If you have a wavy or curly hair type, use a wide-toothed comb to brush your hair while it is still wet. This will distribute moisture and minimize any damage that may be caused. Straight hair should only be brushed or combed when dry to avoid stretching and damage.

Pre-Wash

A pre-poo or pre-wash treatment containing coconut oil can help prevent hygral fatigue.

Coconut oil is thought to penetrate the hair shaft easier than other oils, allowing it to attach to the hair’s protein structure and reduce swelling in the hair cuticle.

If your hair doesn’t get on well with coconut oil, try olive oil or avocado oil instead.

PH Balanced Products

A low pH shampoo (around pH5.5) may also help to balance the pH of your hair and prevent the breakdown of the protective 18-MEA layer of the hair cuticle. This will help close the cuticles on high-porosity hair, which reduces the amount of water that can be absorbed.

Drying

Removing excess water from your hair after washing is important, but avoid cotton towels that risk tangling and stretching your curls. Instead, use a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt to remove the water weight and reduce the movement of your hair cuticles.

Stop Over-Conditioning

Avoid over-conditioning your curls by limiting the time your hair spends drenched in water or conditioning products. A deep conditioner or hair mask should not be left on for longer than 30 minutes, and afterwards, you can seal in the moisture with a high-quality leave-in conditioner.

Treatments to Correct Hygral Fatigue Issue

Hygral fatigue damage can’t be reversed, and hair affected by it will be at risk of further damage. So it’s best to minimize future damage while you wait for the damaged hair to be replaced by new healthy hair.

Use Protein-Rich Treatments

Strengthening the protein structure of the hair shaft through proper conditioning will minimize damage, by preventing the hair shaft from absorbing water and swelling. You will need trial and error to work out how your hair reacts to protein treatments and how often you need to use them.

Find recommendations on protein treatments in Protein Treatments For Curly Hair.

Remove Damaged Hair

Because your hair can’t heal itself as your skin can, there is only so much you can do to repair the damage. Over time, healthy hair will replace the damaged strands. If you have severe hygral fatigue and your hair has started to develop split ends, cutting them out will prevent them from getting worse and causing damage in healthy sections of hair.

Try Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can bind to the hair’s natural protein structure, helping to reduce the absorption of water and making the hair fiber stronger. This makes it particularly useful to minimize the damage from regular chemical treatments like hair colors and perms or frequent use of blow dryers and hot styling tools.

Switch Your Hair Products

It’s best to avoid using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners on hair with hygral fatigue. You might also want to wash your hair less often to avoid stripping the natural protective oils from your hair strands.

Using a pre poo treatment containing coconut oil containing coconut oil before a sulfate-free shampoo will gently cleanse your hair without adding too much moisture. You can then follow up with a protein-rich conditioner to support the protein structure of your hair fibers, and apply a protein-rich leave-in conditioner if desired.

Minimize Other Damage

Avoiding other sources of damage may help to prevent your hair cuticle from breaking down any further. This may include:

  • Chemical treatments like perms or hair straightening
  • Frequent use of hair colors
  • Vigorous shampooing and towel drying
  • Blow drying and hot styling tools in your styling routine
  • Chlorine in swimming pool water

Try to reduce the length of time that your hair is soaking wet in the shower or when you use overnight treatments. You can also prevent your wet hair from contracting too much as it dries by sealing it with an oil treatment after styling.

Hygral Fatigue Before and After

Check out the videos below of others who have had hygral fatigue and fixed it. Learn more about how they overcame it and what the process was like.

FAQs

If you still need more information about hygral fatigue, here are some of your most-asked questions about the condition:

How Long Does Balancing Hygral Fatigue Take?

There’s no set length of time for repairing your hair, as it depends on the condition of your hair. You might find that some sections recover faster than others, and you might have to repeat the regimen a few times before your hair is balanced again.

Is Overly Moisturized Hair the Same as Hygral Fatigue?

Some people use over-moisturized, over-conditioned, and hygral fatigue interchangeably. However, while over-conditioning and over-moisturizing both mean excessive use of moisturizing conditioners or hair oils, hygral fatigue is due to too much water in the hair.

Will Any Hair Treatments or Masks Resolve Hygral Fatigue Symptoms?

If your hair lacks a strong protein structure, using a protein-rich conditioner may help to prevent or treat hygral fatigue symptoms. The type of product you need to use will depend on how severe the symptoms are.

How Do You Keep Your Hair pH Balanced?

Shampoos can often strip the protective 18-MEA layer from your hair strands, causing your hair to be more porous. You can balance your hair pH by using a low-pH shampoo, which may prevent damage to the 18-MEA layer.

The Bottom Line

Hygral fatigue is the damage that occurs when excessive moisture is absorbed by your hair causing it to repeatedly swell and shrink. It can lead to hair losing elasticity, looking dull, and eventually breaking.

While high-porosity hair might be more likely to experience hygral fatigue, it is possible to prevent it from damaging your hair.

If you pay close attention to your hair and catch hygral fatigue early, it is possible to minimize the damage. You can restore your hair to its beautiful best by using the right products, good hair care, and a little patience.
